Slideshow Questions
Posted by Donald Gibson on October 29, 2012 at 5:06 pmI need some advice. I am still learning my way around.
I am doing a slide show of my granddaughter wedding. I have Vegas Pro 8. I know my way around somewhat that is not the problem. How long should the events be? I am thinking about 6to 8 seconds depending on pan/crop.
I would like to know what should be the length of wipes and transitions if any between the events. How long should it take me to get out of the picture?
If there is a tutorial on this I would appreciate seeing it. I know most this may be left up to me. I would just like to know what the standard is.
Thanks so much.

October 29, 2012 at 5:22 pmDon, it’s totally up to you as there is no standard for doing slide shows.
I’ve done slide shows where an image has been on screen for less than 1 second or longer than 10 seconds.
An image that’s on screen for a long time may have a combination of zooming in, tilting up or down and panning left or right.
The bottom line is that if it feels right to you, it is right.
Once you’ve finished editing it, leave it for at least a day and then sit down and watch it again.
You may see things that you want to change that you missed the first time around because you were too close to it.
Save often and make each save a new version number, just in case you change your mind and want to go back a few revisions. -

October 29, 2012 at 6:22 pmIn my slideshows I start with a 4sec length and a 1 sec disolve transition. If the photos contain more than two people, I increase the duration and zoom in and pan so you can recognize the people in the photo.
Checkout this free webinar recording that Sony provided for some inspiration.

October 29, 2012 at 6:41 pmIt’s really up to you but I find that 5 – 6 seconds with a 1 second transition keeps the pace going pretty good.
You might want to take a look at the Sony partner product from VASST called Still Motion. You literally load up all of your pictures press the Apply button and be done with your slide show in less than a minute. Best of all it only costs $9.95 USD and will pay for itself many times over in time savings.
I the interest of full disclosure, I create Still Motion. 😉

I know this is an old post. But I did a search for slide show help. Is the VASST option still the best? Will it let me chose random transitions?

VASST Still Motion is a limited version of the Photo Montage in VASST Ultimate S Lite. Still Motion does not allow you to select your own transitions but Ultimate S Lite does. I would recommend you get Ultimate S Lite instead.

Sorry for the late reply. But thanks for the advice. Before you replied I downloaded Still Motion and it worked fine for what I needed at the time. I’ll check out Ultimate S too.
Thanks
