I would say that this is not normal. Boris will not alter the quality of you footage.
If you are bringing in the still image, what are the original dimensions of the still. If you say that you are panning on the still, but also say you brought it in with your camera then I would asume that it is regular screen size (720×486). If you are presenting this full screen, and panning around it, then I would suspect you have adjusted the scale of this image over 100 %, in which case you are growing pixels. This would definately detoriate an images quality. Also, your capture is DV…if you are playing with video level filters then what you may be seeing is DV artifacting. DV doesn’t handle colour correction all that well as it works in 4:1:1 colour space.Some things to check inside Red. In the preferences make sure that use host settings is enabled, also make sure that render fields as frames is also checked. Uncheck 1:2:1 deflicker, unless you are doing title rolls.
Try this test, bring an image into Red using your previous method. Add a title, but DO NOT animate or move the still or the title, then render this. Are you still seeing image problems ???

It depends on the video card that you have as to whether you can do super black. If not, what you can do, something that we have done in the past is the following. Create your animtion, then add an adjustement layer, add levels and put the output black to a levle above 16. Now drop this comp into another comp and add a black layer behind the animation. Using the info box in After effects, make sure that the black layer and the blackest part of your animation have some space (difference in levels) between them. You can also take this comp, drop it into another comp and apply a luminacne key and check if it keys well. Tell the client to drop the blacks back down through their TBC.
Effectively, you just need to make sure that their is black level space between the black layer and your anime.
Another way to do this, is to ask your lient if a chroma key is acceptable…replace the black layer with a green or blue layer.
IMPORTANT: neither of these types of keys work with semi-transparent elements…

Animate backwards….place the mask for final placement and add keyframes, then go to the starting point and shrink the mask down by simply double clicking the mask and using the tranform box that will show up. I always try to animate backwards to avoid these issues.

you need to go and download stuffit expander and install that onto your mac. Files that end in .sit are compressed folders, much like .zip files for pc.

BCC 4 has tons of light effects, many of which produce this type of look.

For more flexibility I use change color…..
Use 3 copies of same footage. Apply change color to top layer and select the color. Next in the filter select color matte from the drop down. Set this to be a track matte to layer two using luminance.
Adjust track 3 as you would like. I do this, as usually I don’t want to just remove color from the background..I may want to use a tritone filter along with blurs and levels to mess with the image.Hope this helps

Hopefully at some point I will make it to NAB to hook up with the other COW folk…If all goes well with my new business, then who knows.

I would think that you could do this with wave world and caustics. If you set the logo to be the ground in wave world, you can then animate the height and steepnes to give the effect of the logo coming out of the water. You will definately get interaction between the water and the logo.

I find AE 7 screams on my machine…I also find that I work faster and better than in 6.5 It is a drag for me to go back to 6.5 Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

The Kona is a capture board.
Fiber drives mean more throughput, faster transfer rates. Depends on your needs as to whether you need these or not….
