    We have a client that has to do a live key on a piece that we are doing for them. They have requested this;

    “Our equipment doesn’t allow us to do a live chroma key…can you make the hole key super, super -40db black?
    We can do a luma key.”

    I am baffled as to what this is. The only thing that I can think of is that there is someway to make the hole that they need to key out, blacker than black and they’ll do the luma key based on that. I just have no clue how to do this. Any thoughts??
    Thanks in advance for your help.

    It depends on the video card that you have as to whether you can do super black. If not, what you can do, something that we have done in the past is the following. Create your animtion, then add an adjustement layer, add levels and put the output black to a levle above 16. Now drop this comp into another comp and add a black layer behind the animation. Using the info box in After effects, make sure that the black layer and the blackest part of your animation have some space (difference in levels) between them. You can also take this comp, drop it into another comp and apply a luminacne key and check if it keys well. Tell the client to drop the blacks back down through their TBC.

    Effectively, you just need to make sure that their is black level space between the black layer and your anime.

    Another way to do this, is to ask your lient if a chroma key is acceptable…replace the black layer with a green or blue layer.

    IMPORTANT: neither of these types of keys work with semi-transparent elements…
