That is a tough question….

I know here at my work when we do work with outside Post houses that they provide us with their AE projects….but i am pretty sure that this is negociated before the project commences. Also the post houses generally format the project to make it easier for us to make changes.

In my business life, I would sell my projects, but I would not give them away. As you mentionned a programmer would not give away source codes, and of course most photographers would not give away negatives (unless that was negociated before the fact). That said, it would also depend on the client. If it is a good client that I could risk losing for the price of my projects, then maybe I would give it away this time, but mention that this type of thing needs to be included in the price of future contracts. I would definately not rework the project to make it easier for others to work in my project.

I would suggest posting this over in the Business forum, as there are some very smart business folks over there.

A lot of Aaharon’s tutorials would be good for a beginner. He has a very good way of explaining what he is doing, and while sometimes the subject of his tutorials may be a little more advanced, he has a lot of tutorials that are quite basic…You can also buy his DVDs that offer a collection of his online tutorials.

If you want to spend money but get up to speed very quickly, then maybe Total training might be where you may want to look. Brian Maffit and his staff make excellent training DVDs that take you basically from opening the application to some very advanced effect creations….definately well worth the money. There are also any of the AE books by Chris and Trish Meyer which will undoubtedly teach you a lot about AE.

Export a reference QT file…..it will basically just export links to your hardrive….so the file will basically not weigh anything.

The only issue with this can come when trying to do a backup, as the media will not get collected in a collect file in AE.

Personally I think that AE is pretty much the industry standard….rather than spending money on new apps, I would look at spending the money on updgrading my PC to make AE run faster…

Create the strokes using Vector paint in AE (Apply the filter to a solid layer)…. When you apply the effect, a little menu will appear on the left upper corner of the composite window. There is a fly-out menu that you can use to adjust options….one of those options is the SHIFT-PAINT actions. Change this to realtime.

Now, holding down the shift key, paint your arrow or whatever. Once that is done, in the filter window, adjust the pulldown to animated strokes….next adjust the playback speed to get what you want…and change the display method to on transparent (you can do this before you draw if necessary)….Voilà, animated paint strokes.

It may be simpler for you to create each paint stroke on it’s own layer.

I would try rendering out to PAL first…just make sure that you pick the best possible output (CODEC) that you can.

Sounds like you need a non-linear editing rather than a compositing application. Since you are familiar with AE, I would suggest Premiere Pro.

Ae is not meant to work in realtime…

And, I do do some work that is entirely AE, but for the most part my work does involve video, as I am a video editor who does motion graphics (not a motion graphics artist who does video)….
