  • Recording brush strokes for animated play back.

    Hi,

I need to record things like circles and arrows being drawn on top of footage, so it looks like it’s being drawn on, similar to how you see in sport shows sometimes. I thought Flash might be the programme to do it (having seen flash animations of drawing from start to finish, such as this: https://fcmx.net/vec/v.php?i=001787 ), but I don’t really know how to go about it, and was hoping I could achieve something similar in After Effects. Any ideas?
I’m really trying to avoid having to do it with keyframes, as I have a LOT of them to do…

    :o(

    Thank you,

    Michael

Create the strokes using Vector paint in AE (Apply the filter to a solid layer)…. When you apply the effect, a little menu will appear on the left upper corner of the composite window. There is a fly-out menu that you can use to adjust options….one of those options is the SHIFT-PAINT actions. Change this to realtime.

Now, holding down the shift key, paint your arrow or whatever. Once that is done, in the filter window, adjust the pulldown to animated strokes….next adjust the playback speed to get what you want…and change the display method to on transparent (you can do this before you draw if necessary)….Voilà, animated paint strokes.

It may be simpler for you to create each paint stroke on it’s own layer.

    Hope this helps ya !!!

I don’t know motion at all unfortunately. I think I should of been more clear though, the effect I’m trying to achieve is that of recording a pen’s strokes. So the ideal would be if there was a way to record what I did on my Wacom tablet as a movie. Thank you, though.

To answer the actual question… Flash doesn’t have any type of recording feature like that.

The example link you pointed to, I would guess was captured with a program that records your screen, then imported to Flash from there.

Another way to “fake” the effect you’re looking for, is to draw the whole arrow, then animate a mask layer over it that will progressively reveal more and more of the stroke.

I found your post because I am trying to do something similar, except for me, it is important that the brush strokes look like they are fine art, realistic looking AND animated. So far I’ve been fruitless. 🙁

Good luck! Feel free to email me if you have a question.
