I tried for a long time to update my perpetual licence for Red Giant, but Maxon “Sales” was persistent in being “not interested”. I would go as far as to state that Maxon “killed off” Red Giant, and it is no longer installed or offered to my clients.

But for everything else, I have “replaced” Cinema 4D with Blender, and have plety of options for alternatives to Red Giant.

Hey Robert,

So sorry to hear about your corrupted project.

I would start with Option 1, but only after the corrupted project has been copied to somewhere safe.

Option 2 and 3 seem to be a long way around, just to end up in the same place.

Out of interest, have you tried to set-up a new project, and import just the last good Sequence from the corrupted project?

Also, when you say “corrupted”, can you describe what happens when opening the current project?

Hey Dan,

That sounds like a bug.

Although, Adobe might suggest that you turn off extensions. Which I hate every time, as it solves their problem, but not mine.

Having said that, it sounds like the ports are fighting for access whilst you are recording Voice Over.
Even if no “changes”, it could be a “back-ground” update have caused the “one-way-traffic-jam”?

Question then becomes; if you run FCPX and/or Davinci and do the same with recording Voice Over straight to Timeline, whilst playing video out to monitor on that Mac. Does the problem repeat itself?
If not, the starting point is likely to be Adobe.

Hey Jon,

Yes, for “seeing” the menu you are likely to need BNC out of VTR to analogue in on a TV – could use a phono connector, maybe put a SCART plug on the end of it. If stuck, you can also download manual to read the various codes. Which will allow you to use the VTR front panel to dial through and change menu settings.

On the topic of stop/starting:
My problem is that it stops at the end of each clip and needs to be restarted for the following clip.

This could come from a “faulty” recording, where the device (camera?) did not pick up the sync track and continued from where the previous recording stopped on the tape. In other words, you do not have continous sync recorded on the tape.

Best way of dealing with that, if you don’t need the time-code(?), is to ask your recording device to ignore the loss of signal. You may also need to switch the VTR to manual, so your editing software does not try to override it.

If you need time-code, then you are in for the stop-and-start process.

I was going to suggest that you nest those clips, and then see what happens.

Then decided to do search for “Transform Effect” as I don’t use it. Adobe Premiere Pro site is useless if you search for “Transform Effect”, and if you just search for “Transform” you might as well open the Web-Everything folder 😉

However, there is another site on the top 8 Google search:

And, it suggests that nesting might be the best way to avoid the problem.

Hey Rafael,

You make a good point – the tool should not be in the latest version of PPro if Adobe has retired it.

Neither should the non-cloud Creative Cloud folder be list in your file manager as a top folder. When it is just one ordinary folder like all other folders.

With M&M’s I can understand Shrinkflation, but Adobe is doing this to divert cash to pay $1Bn to Figma for failed take-over, and use more money developing Adobe Express. So your clients no longer have to use you to do their editing for them.

I am sure that Adobe will continue to make money, but at what cost to their loyal userbase?

And, in all fairness, we are spoiled for choice for alternatives.

Thought I remembered this, but had to search on it. It looks like Classic Titles got renamed to legacy Titles and then retired.

If you are a “single subscription user” you’ll find that Adobe also shut your cloud down, as that the name Creative Cloud, now, is all butt a joke to all freelancers, SME’s and students.

Next up is whether Broadcast News organisations will keep using Adobe, as the built in Generative A.I. to come, may cause a reputational problem once the “student” in the room decides to “create” a scene rather than using actual footage…

Hey Jon,

If you got another Firewire device working on your set-up, I would expect the DSR-2000 Firewire also to work.

However, you have not filled out your profile on the COW, so I don’t know whether you are PAL or NTSC based?
And, have you tried to attach a monitor (Television) to the back of the DSR-2000 to see if it is actually playing anything?
The VTR you are using was built for (semi) professional use, so there are menu’s like Sync (could be a switch on the front) and Output signal to investigate – but this is best done with a manual in front of you, whilst sitting by the VTR.

DO NOT FORGET to write down what you are changing on the VTR, before doing so, just to be able to return to starting point.

Hey Jon,

The DSR-2000 comes with firewire, so I can’t see why it would not work for your setup?

There is only one way to find out, and that is to test it out.

With regard to PP6, that is an old version going back many years. There are still people here who uses it, who might be able to answer that question.
If on Mac, you might be better off using an old version of FCP to capture with, and then edit on PP6?
Afterall, you just need something that can give you a stable capture on a mac using Firewire, right?

I did an editing job a few weeks back where the crew used 4 x FX6 cameras – it needed a bit og grading, but the files were fine. I reckon there is still some life left in that line of cameras. And, one should not discount how the smaller Sony Alpha cameras changed AF across the line of their cameras.

Canon meanwhile appears to be fading out their line-up of dedicated video cameras…

I’m going to be keeping an eye on the PYXIS as 6K looks mighty inviting. But hopefully Blackmagic will follow up with a version that has ND filter built in.
