BMD PYXIS
Posted by Eric Santiago on April 15, 2024 at 1:26 pmBMD just announced the PYXIS 6K camera.
Crazy price but no internal NDs.
Anyone looking into this one?
We’re researching and so far were stuck with the Sony FX6 due to budget and compatibility with current workflow at day job.

April 15, 2024 at 2:25 pmDownsides to me are no internal ND and only one xlr in. Not a problem if you only run double-system, but with a small crew or one-man-band, a real disadvantage.

April 16, 2024 at 12:37 amYes, I was not entirely impressed with the IBC launch of the smaller camera, and thought that this might come sooner or later.
However, got the SDI that I wanted, but lost the HDMI out on this – can’t win…
Although some might argue that it is more important what happens at the front, except for me it is also about the various productions that I can use it on.But certainly worth considering as an entry point into high-end film making.

April 16, 2024 at 2:24 amFound some online reviews and its not hitting the mark for my day jobs needs.
The frame rates is an issue for us as well as the internal NDs.

April 16, 2024 at 9:36 amHey Eric,
Out of interest, what frame-rates are you shooting on?
And, have you got any experience with using “add-on” ND filters?
Kind of tempted to just fix it in the post, but…. …. maybe not 😱😀 -

April 16, 2024 at 1:39 pmI have own (personally) a few REDs. My current is a Dragon 6K.
I love shooting at 48fps and my go too for action/dramatic cine shots is 96fps.
For ND I use mostly 4×6 on a few diff matte boxes depending on the project.
I shoot a lot of shorts, indies, music, and had my time in full length.
But that’s my home life 🙂
At work its a lot of corporate frames e.g. talking heads, meetings, feel good etc… but we also do product shots with some action.
Product shots are mostly Canon 5D MKIV for the simplicity (gimbal, rotating tables, etc…).
But we also use two Panasonic EVA-1s for motion (as well as the boring talking heads stuff) and the best we got out of that is 48fps.
We want to get into mimicking the Phantom with some of the product shoots e.g. water, more water and heck even more water 😉
We are now leaning towards the Sony FX6 due to the internal NDs.
We need that for the corp stuff and chasing a CEO through hallways and into an uncontrolled lighting area, the int ND as well as the AF would keep me from quitting the day job LOL!

April 16, 2024 at 5:56 pmI did an editing job a few weeks back where the crew used 4 x FX6 cameras – it needed a bit og grading, but the files were fine. I reckon there is still some life left in that line of cameras. And, one should not discount how the smaller Sony Alpha cameras changed AF across the line of their cameras.
Canon meanwhile appears to be fading out their line-up of dedicated video cameras…
I’m going to be keeping an eye on the PYXIS as 6K looks mighty inviting. But hopefully Blackmagic will follow up with a version that has ND filter built in.

April 19, 2024 at 1:26 pmI didn’t realize the FX6 don’t have IBIS. There is a work around using their Catalyst software.
I will need to test that first before we pull the trigger.
The rumors of a FX6 Mark II also is out there but again that’s just a rumor.
I was hoping for something to be ground breaking at NAB 2024 but nothing. The PYXIS could still be that but yes without int ND its a tough sell.
I have till fall to move to a new system, maybe something will shake by then.

April 19, 2024 at 3:57 pmHey Eric,
Yes, that is a bit of a nasty discovery, not least as the FX3 appears to have it…
How much processing does the catalyst software require you to do, or would it be faster to use Warp-Stabilize or something like Mocha to do the job?
