    Dear Anand,

Control on film set is difficult, at the most of times, even more so when you are at the mercy of mother nature.

Where soes the control start/stop – you want to give directions, but do you want people to question them back? Will you then need to have a feed from hidden cameras – just pushing for you to consider what is important, and where you’ll need to trust the performers and crew to bring it home on the day.

The more you want to do, the more bulky does it get. One way radio from you to cyclist is easy enough, and should be possible to conceal.

If each rider is carrying a concealed radio microphone, then that might be your return audio solution where the recordist give you an output from their mixer.

If you search for film intercom, sites like this comes up:

    https://www.fullcompass.com/gearcast/intercoms-for-stage-and-production-buyers-guide

    https://www.clearcom.com/Markets/Film-TV-Production

    https://mguide.eu/en/produkt/intercom-system-for-wireless-communication-on-a-film-production-set-or-at-a-concert-at-350-2av/

Keep in mind that this kit can be expensive to buy, and most film productions tend to hire them. The more complext, the more people you’ll need to fit, check and maintain (change batteries).

Hope that this helps you a tiny bit further.

    Hey Anand,

Remote instructions and communications in film production is not a new issue. But is all detirmined on how many people who have on location, and what your budget is?

Walkie Talkie with headset, although you may “share” the frequency with local construction companies or law enforcement…

If you have a mobile signal and enough data, you could run a WhatsApp group call. But in all instances, you will either have to hide the device on the “performers”, or use a megaphone.

There is no easy solution, except as to who must be on the call. And, who can be directed by a B-Crew or assistant director hiding in a ditch near the cyclists…

  • Hey Sara,

No problem, happy to hear that you are back to normal.

One question for the “post-mortem” for the production, as to why the camera and/or sound department did not feed that information back through the chain to you?

Mistakes happens for all of us, but not owing them when realised, is not good for anyone.
The audio recordist might have written it in the notes, which may be stuck on a computer on set…
Either way they gave you grey hair, unless you pulled it out, whilst thinking that the problem was at your end.

Good Luck with the edit – do come back and tell us where to watch the final version.

    Hey Tyler,

Of the top of my head without applying brain-cells (apology in advance if this does not work):

If I was in a rush and had to find a “quick & dirty” solution, I would freeze frame the first frame, and then apply a “difference key” + maybe finding a way of reverting or isolating that.

But there are people here who knows A.E. better than I do.

  • Hey Tova,

Out of interest, in what channel is your recorded audio channels based?

Sometimes a camera might only have recorded camera microphone audio on channel 3 & 4, and if you are syncing to channel one only, this may be the cause for why it will not sync.

  • I normally double the tracks and pop on a audio effect “fill left with right” in one track, and “fill right with left” on the other track.

  • Neil,

With all due respect, shouting will get you no where on Creative Cow. Especially if you are on a level where you want people, giving their time for free to help you, to provide a solution served on a silver plate.

I am guessing that you will want to turn the whole image into an alpha mask, and then manipulate that for what-ever reason.

There is this thing called Google, that will give you results like this:
    https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/tutorials/fill-alpha-channel-with-any-image-or-video–115260/

But whether you do a key, or mess around with an Alpha mask, the outcome is likely to be the same, except using a key effect, combined with a mask, will be WYSIWYG. Where as Alpha, you have to remember what color you are messing with…

Alpha is a completely different mindset, which as you say, is best found in Photoshop. Or After Effects. Or Davinci Resolve…?

    With kind regards

    Hey Rich,

    Yes, Pluraleyes is no more.

I used to be number one fan of Red Giant, until after Maxon took it on a destructive path of ignoring their current customer base (litterally: Their sales office is “Don’t call us, we will call you – sometime, like never).

Instead, I became a number one fan of Blender (Free). Although that has nothing to do with Pluraleyes, it kind of sends a message to Maxon that they might want to “change direction” in their approach to sales. (Sorry for that rant, but nice to get out of the system 🙂)

My advice is that you keep using the work-flow with VP18, and cross your fingers that future Vegas versions will continue to be backward compatible.

Alternatively, most of the higher end NLE’s has got good footage sync tools baked in to their base software. So may be worth investigating crossing over using those, or see if you can import project data from Avid, PPro, Davinci (Free) etc to Vegas 19?

Go for 128 GB RAM regardless, once you’ve got it, you don’t want to go back. And the cost in the bigger picture, is small, in comparison to the gains you get in performance IMHO.

Yesterday, I found this blog from NVidia, and as I run both Adobe and Davinci, the new ADA boards started making sense (I got a RTX 3500 ADA in my laptop). Currently going through making the changes to my system, updating drivers, and installing “plug-ins”.
Might not be what you are looking for, but anything that can improve working speed and processing, helps:

  • Hey Neil,

Somehow the html got corrupted when I pasted it into my post above. If you delete the end of that html, you should get this. Which hopefully will work:
    https://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/ca/video-editing/how-to-color-grade-videos-like-a-professional

In essence, what you are looking to do is a “Color Key” or “Change to Color” effect – these are stable tools of most video editing software tools. There is nothing amazing to this, except for the expectations of the production.

As I am sure that you’ll recognise, your image would be easier to work with if shot on a Green Screen, and the background added afterwards. However, for total control (perfection), you can mask the foreground, so you either only apply effects to that or the background or both.

But in its basic form, and there are many tutorials on how to do this, you’ll want to pick the color that you are changing, and manipulate the range and intensity of that color only.
This is one slightly older tutorial, but appears to cover it:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngfR-6t8B3g

In Vegas Pro 20 you should have Boris FX Primatte Studio for advanced chroma keying, which may do the job for you in regard to isolating the colour. In any case, you should spend time getting to know that plugin really well.

If you have the finance, you whould also investigate BorisFX Continuum suite – comes with a free trial, and you can subscribe on a monthly basis which will allow you to use it as a pay-as-you-go.

If you really want to get deeper into your finishing, the Blackmagic Davinci (with Resolve and Fusion) is currently the best game in town, which starts from free. Or as you are making reference to Photoshop, you could take up After Effects (also comes with a monthly plan).

But, regardless, there is no easy quick solution to your question, as every piece of video and image is different. And, you can easily spend hours on just one piece of video, for just at the end of it, you are the only one who will notice the difference.

    Hope that this helps.
