There is no right or wrong answer to that question.

However, your BlackMagic will come with a lot more functionality and options, which comes at a price – as such one might argue that you get better quality with the BlackMagic, but you are also likely to have to invest 3 x cost of camera house, to have a fully functional kit including lenses, tripod and lights.

From time to time I work on productions where the 4K+ imaging chip on a mobile phone will out-perform that of a high-end 4K camera. But that is often dependant on the experience of the camera operator and how controllable the scene is for lighting and audio.

If concerned about matching the camera charitistics, maybe look at CineMatch (FilmConvert).

Should add that I have the packages that covers all of their supported NLE’s, but as I am no currently doing much multicam, it has not really been an issue.

Hey Bob,

I am a great fan of Topaz Video A.I. and have been with it from the early days. Although yet to install it on my Davinci Studio as a plug-in.

Just over a year ago I had a 22-year-old PAL 4:3 master (Betacam SP) of a 24-minute discussion program with the now late President Carter. I upscaled to HD, without the side-black-bars and did a touch regrade. And it looked great.

I hear you on the perpetual licence v subscription. However, A.I. utility tools (and generative) is improving at a speed, where you are likely to have to update yearly anyway. In the case of Topaz Video, they are updating monthly, sometimes twice monthly. List here:

However, there are other players out there, and Davinci is catching up on A.I. fast. If you look for “Superscale” inside Davinci Studio that might do the job for you.

The future is as we saw with Avid announcement at IBC where they have made agreements with some 600 A.I. companies to plug straight inside their tools, like the Media Composer. This will allow their users to select what A.I. tools they will use, and what not.
Reason for this is that what is best in class today, may be leapfrogged tomorrow by a competitor.

In other words, A.I. functionality and quality in Broadcast and Film Production is fluent, and will keep changing. That is before one realises, that you may use 4 -5, or more different A.I. tools to make up one piece of video – from voice cloning for a script to voice-over, background, foreground, key character in video with some vfx and sfx to complete the picture.

I recently with one client, where we had some low-quality video, coined the phrase “Let me A.I. Botox the speaker and see how far we can go before the face won’t move…”
We laughed, but that is the way we in some situations will be going.

If you want, I’ll be happy to throw one of your SD clips, and a HD clip through Topaz for you to look at. Alternatively, I am sure that there is a free trial too.

Please note that of all the name dropping above, this is only a fraction of companies that has software/apps that can enhance your video and audio.

Hey Hans,

Sounds exciting.

You are already suggesting trying other platforms.

The A.I. Generative market is moving so fast now, that one provider that might be the best today will be the worst tomorrow. Which is where the likes of AVID are now giving access to multiple platforms for the user to choose from (subscribe) for a specific job. Whether generative or utility A.I..

My advice is to think about workflow, in the same way you’ll use compositing tools to bring multiple sources together in one video/image.

Currently I would:
Consider Elevenlabs.io for voice cloning, if you want your voice on it?
For video, the developers with the deepest pockets would be:

But there may be an outlier which is better. Or you may find different tools does different parts better.

Sorry, but you need to give a bit more context, as ProRes is normally a codec only used for video and audio together.

What do you have in your timeline, and what is it that you need to deliver?

PCM audio like video can sit inside a number of different types of file “containers”, although it may involve a “conversion” to a lower quality format.

Must admit that I have not upgraded, yet, but is thinking about it. Not least as I need to use the Text to Speech module.

Have you got Magix Soundforge Pro and tried to do the Text to Speech there?

As they are different software packages, their A.I. might reside on different servers.

Hey Anthony,

Out of interest, why are you exporting to Wav files for transport between Adobe PPro and Audition?
Wav files are just a file “container” and anything can happen inside it when you export.

Instead, maybe try the direct route?

Hey Giacomo,

Let’s not label fellow COW users with words like “bullsh*t” when it comes to technical issues.

I am on a PC, and PPro v25 has over the last 9 months destroyed several of my project files + corrupted some in mysterious ways.
Part of the problem was software/hardware issues with NVidia board, already documented on the Adobe’s own forums by others. A case where Adobe appears to interfere with the board.

Never the less, if Adobe crashed the software (Mac OS?).
And if the film and project files was on an external drive, with the result that drive got rejected by another Adobe software error, rather than ejected by the user.

Then, from following the engineer department at a very large broadcaster. This is the single biggest issue for losing all your project files. More often, than not, it is because a producer have pulled the external drive from from the MAC, without ejecting it first.
(One problem that Windows PC don’t seem to have).

Could also be something as simple as a broken cable.
One thing the PC vendors didn’t continue was the “latch” on CAD network cables, or the BNC connector. Instead we have USBc (Thunderbolt) connectors that will easily fall out of the camera, or the MAC, ruining the files on the drive.
(Yes, there is a number of accessories that deals with this issue, but they don’t come as standard)

But in that scenario, losing all of your files is a real possibility.
There are people out there who may have the expertise and software to recover the drive.

I’m sure that it will be OK.
And, your motives are valiant.

You do say:

That brought me back to the old days of the WWUG (World Wide User Group), from which CreativeCow later emerged. A place where anyone can share their expertise, publish work and self-promote, whilst helping others.

Granted, the COW does not cover the larger spectrum of arts, as you do.

But without the dough, how will you manage and promote your site?

Also, you would be surprised how many spammer-scammers that on a daily basis will use your site for “back-links” – before you know it, you might be spending Two Thousand a month on subscriptions and developers to keep the site running, whilst keeping the bad actors out.

Then the other recently hidden problem, is the amount A.I. written articles/posts that you’ll see. Don’t get me wrong, A.I. do have a place in the our industry, and arts generally, but it can not (yet) beat the authentic voice of a real human.

Although early days, your site looks great.

But don’t be afraid of thinking about cost of running it, and attracting the dough for doing so.

Maybe even reach out to Barn Master Brie, as there might be an informal tie up between the Cow’s user forums, industry news, and your FC articles.

There you go, your first “back-link” to your post, right?

Hey Ian,

Have you tried resaving the image as RGB in 8-Bit or 16-Bit Colour mode?

The other obvious solution is for you to trash the preference and delete all render files.

Maybe, set up a new project, and try to import the file there to see if that makes a difference?
If you have it, take it straight into PPro Sequence via After Effects?
