as edward suggested try both, download the free version of avid and put in on the same computer you have vegas.
play around a bit, expecially compositing
render the same project on both – you’ll get a rendering speed comparison for the type of work you do.
play some more
then think how much more expensive a really good avid system would be,
play some more
and wonder how the hell you’re going to do THAT in avid, and in time?
used ’em all, makes no difference, wetware is what really matters….

June 15, 2006 at 7:08 am in reply to: OT: Creating Family History Video’s as a Business ? Interviewing Parents/Grandparents, etchave to say that as a business goes, it doesn’t! i’ve had a few clients in the past who’ve attempted it (i did the on line editing – so my part was pretty simple), but they all basically gave the idea up.
as vveg just wrote, it’s time incredibly time consuming, difficult organising peripheral material (i’ve done a few doco’s based on individuals in the past, and these were relatively ‘famous’ people, so there was a great deal of material readily avaiable).
as a commercial venture with just the ‘family’ paying for it, i would think it just too expensive. say a half hour (based on my experiences), you’d have to be charging around 3 > 5k – and that’s for a pretty basic video… most of the ones i’ve worked on were budgeted at around 15 > 25k…

epilogue
telling the producer he was a wanker for using a ‘friend’ instead of a pro was, at the time, a little hotheaded, however, it seems he asked around, was told the same story about the lp problem, and what do you know. he turns up with the camera and BINGO, we now have the four tapes transferrred to eight.
be that as it may, i’m never going to touch a job that involves lp tapes again!

bugger!
the guy who shot it said it played back fine on his camera (ha!), so he doesn’t see any need to send his camera..
had a long chat with the client/producer, and as far as i’m concerned, he can take the tapes and do what he thinks best. i have no intention of sitting in the middle of a bun fight cause someone doesn’t know enough about shooting to realise the potential pit falls of lp mode.
thanks for qualifying my worries 😉
