avid express vs. vegas
Posted by Craig Scime on July 3, 2006 at 10:53 pmI am a happy vegas using guy, have been for 2 years. However I feel that if I switch to avid express I will gain better “quality”, faster renders and DVD’s, and more programs that can better work with my system.
Should I invest and switch? Please tell me pros and consTed Snow replied 19 years, 10 months ago 6 Members · 5 Replies -

July 4, 2006 at 12:48 amI’m very pro-Vegas, so that’s my vote. Vegas is the only NLE I’ve used that allows me to focus 99.9% of my brainpower on creativity, and .1% on the mechanics of the program. Other NLE’s render me at least 50% less effective, it seems, even after I’ve gotten past the learning curve.
I know several people who use Avid at work, and none of them like it. They all use other NLE’s for their own projects. That tells me something.
I used to work as a cameraman for a production company that used both Avid and Premiere, and the editors used to joke that the only reason Avid is considered “pro” is because it’s a b*tch to use. All of them chose to use Premeire at the office, unless the boss insisted they edit a specific project on Avid *merely* because he wanted the client to see them using it. I guess he didn’t want the client to think “Hey, I could do this!”. If the client wasn’t going to be there watching them edit, they always went with Premiere.

July 4, 2006 at 2:55 amIf you want to learn Avid, that’s fine. If you want faster renders, you’ll probably get them. If you want better quality, you probably won’t see any and, in fact, may see lower quality. Plus you’ll lose a lot of the compositing abilities of Vegas. Bottom line… try them both and see which one you like best and that’s your choice.

July 4, 2006 at 10:03 amas edward suggested try both, download the free version of avid and put in on the same computer you have vegas.
play around a bit, expecially compositing
render the same project on both – you’ll get a rendering speed comparison for the type of work you do.
play some more
then think how much more expensive a really good avid system would be,
play some more
and wonder how the hell you’re going to do THAT in avid, and in time?
used ’em all, makes no difference, wetware is what really matters….

July 4, 2006 at 5:45 pmfaster render more than likely, no quality increase that I am aware of, audio probably no where near as good as vegas, but hey , you can say you use AVID.
Never bad to try new programs though, I think it is important not to get locked into the Vegas is the only one, or FCP ,or Edius or Avid or whatever
try em out -

July 5, 2006 at 6:20 amI went from Ulead (nothing but problems) to Vegas and haven’t felt the need to even try anything else. Winrock is right…Vegas is probably one of the best audio editors out there. Unlimited tracks, good FX, very easy to edit and the list goes on. This is just icing on the Video cake.
