i have just received 4 dv tapes that were, presumably, recorded in long play mode. i’ve tried them in my dsr11 and they display tc glitches like nobody’s business, 90min duration, and occassional picture glitches, though the audio is fine…

i’ve never had / used / dealt with long play tapes (i could kill the client who hired a ‘friend’ to shoot interviews in another state.) –

    is what i’m seeing normal?

would i be any better off playing them through my 170?

i’ve read about lp tapes being problematic in playback in anything but the camera they were recorded in. if this is true, i suppose i’ll have to have them send me the camera…

More often than not tapes recorded in LP mode will show some type of glitch when being played back in something other than the machine it was recorded on. At least thats my experience. What I’ve done in the past is actully capture it 2 times as it never gave the glitch in the exact same place so I could do a bit of slice and dice to get one good piece of video.

    It’s true.

I should further clarify by saying that you MAY WELL be able to play back on a different device, but you shouldn’t be surprised if you cannot.

    bugger!

the guy who shot it said it played back fine on his camera (ha!), so he doesn’t see any need to send his camera..

had a long chat with the client/producer, and as far as i’m concerned, he can take the tapes and do what he thinks best. i have no intention of sitting in the middle of a bun fight cause someone doesn’t know enough about shooting to realise the potential pit falls of lp mode.

thanks for qualifying my worries 😉

    epilogue

telling the producer he was a wanker for using a ‘friend’ instead of a pro was, at the time, a little hotheaded, however, it seems he asked around, was told the same story about the lp problem, and what do you know. he turns up with the camera and BINGO, we now have the four tapes transferrred to eight.

be that as it may, i’m never going to touch a job that involves lp tapes again!
