That is about the only thing that you can do if that is the only way it exists. DVDs need to have the footage encoded anamorphic with the 16×9 flag set in order to show it properly on a widescreen TV.
It might be worth checking with your client to see if they have the movie on another format that is not letterboxed. They probably didn’t shoot it letterboxed so it might exist somewhere as HD footage or even standard definition anamorphic.HTH.

Did your sequence settings match what you captured the footage at? If it doesn’t, you would have to render it. Also, if you drop in 16×9 footage into a 4×3 sequence, it will scale it down and basically “letterbox” it for you.

Are you trying to do the Reverse Telecine within Final Cut?
I haven’t done it from within Final Cut, but if you open Cinema Tools, then open your clip and select Reverse Telecine, there is an option to have it conform to 24fps or 23.98.HTH

This actually needs a bit of clarifying. You said that you have a 720p 60 footage. Your timeline should match your footage so is your timeline 720p 60? If this is the case, then you can just drop it into a 29.97 timeline to output. 60 is 60 fields which basically translates to 30 frames per second or 29.97fps.
But… if you had footage that was at 23.98 and your timeline was at 23.98, you would then need to add a pull down to output it correctly to 29.97 and this would NOT involve just dropping it into a 29.97 timeline. You would leave it in the 23.98 timeline, use and Easy Set-up to output to a 29.97 device and let Final Cut add the pull down. (See page 525-526 in Volume III of the manual.) Chances are you are already setup to do the proper pulldown. This can be found under System Settings, playback control. The typical pulldown pattern is 2:3:2:3.HTH

My only suggestion would be to either make sure you are in Editing mode not Mastering mode. If you are in Mastering mode, click on the Mastering Settings tab and check that you are not putting in a black leader.

I’m not sure about a solution to your third problem, but for the first two – do you have more than one sequence open? Sometimes, especially when you are working with HD material, Final Cut can’t handle a lot of open sequences. Try closing all but one and make sure that your windows don’t overlap.

We installed the new version 2 drivers on two of our Macs running FCP 5.0.4 and no problems so far. Works like a charm.

Well, that all sounds right. Just for grins, you might want to use the Easy Set-up for DV.
On the other side, there maybe some setting that your friend used that didn’t quite match up with Final Cut’s timeline. Since he didn’t do audio, that can be ruled out, but there are some other settings in there as well when he does a render (aside from the specific codec and frame size.) Maybe he didn’t render it with a field setting and FCP HD is having issues with that. I’m not saying that’s the problem, just that there are other little things that can be set when rendering from After Effects.
I think that my only suggestion, is to have him do some tests for you using different settings and see which one works so that you don’t have to do any rendering.Leigh

And your timeline is set to DV 720×480? (Just to clarify.)
That is an odd one, if both are set to the same thing.
Did you use an Easy Set-up to set your timeline or did you make your own settings?Hmm…
