AE files into FCP HD 4.5
I have AE 6.5 Pro on my G5, but am illiterate with it. A friend created and rendered files in AE 6.5 Pro for me and I FTP’d them onto my system. When I imported them into FCP HD 4.5, I got a warning that the files were not optimized for FCP HD and to use the Media Manager to optimize them. Is this some sort of codec issue? Do the files need to be re-rendered? Can I do it somehow with the FCP Media Manager (which I’ve never used) or something else on my machine without having to go back to my friend and have him re-export them all…? Thanks…

I think that we need a little more info about the files. Open them up in Quicktime then select Window – Show Movie info. That will tell you what codec the movies are and what, if any, the audio is set at. From what I have read, the optimization is an audio thing. If you aren’t worried about the audio, if your friend rendered any with the files, then you should be set to go. If you are worried about the audio, try exporting them with a 48khz setting and see if that helps.
Or post back on what Quicktime’s info says and we can probably be of more help to you.

Thanks, Leigh. Movie Info shows the format as DV 720 x 480, which is the same as the program into which they’re being imported. There’s no audio on the clips. I bypassed the Media Manager warning and dropped the clips on the timeline. They required rendering but seem to integrate fine. Any thoughts on why the issue if I encounter it in the future…? Thanks!

And your timeline is set to DV 720×480? (Just to clarify.)
That is an odd one, if both are set to the same thing.
Did you use an Easy Set-up to set your timeline or did you make your own settings?Hmm…

I set up the timeline at DV NTSC 48khz, which is where it primarily stays. I import almost all my footage at DV 720 x 480 and any other assets I set to be the same. Please forgive any illiteracy with FCP. I’m functional, but not necessarily knowledgeable…

Well, that all sounds right. Just for grins, you might want to use the Easy Set-up for DV.
On the other side, there maybe some setting that your friend used that didn’t quite match up with Final Cut’s timeline. Since he didn’t do audio, that can be ruled out, but there are some other settings in there as well when he does a render (aside from the specific codec and frame size.) Maybe he didn’t render it with a field setting and FCP HD is having issues with that. I’m not saying that’s the problem, just that there are other little things that can be set when rendering from After Effects.
I think that my only suggestion, is to have him do some tests for you using different settings and see which one works so that you don’t have to do any rendering.Leigh
