I just tried it. I rendered to the Uncompressed 10bit codec. There is no curve at all in Final Cut and it seems to match exactly to the preview output of After Effects.
BTW: I have a 2.5 Dual G5 running Tiger and Final Cut 5.0.4.

Thanks for all the info. I may have to try the Capture Now. I am capturing with SDI. And I did do a test after talking with tech support at Kona where I captured to an internal drive instead of my Medea raid using the DVCPro HD compressor. I got the exact same wrong timecode. These clips are going to be for video FX and they really need to be uncompressed (the client initally wanted them with the Blackmagic codec).

The plus sign is definitely the cause of the problem. This means that you still images have an alpha channel associated with it. If you don’t want the images to key (which is what the alpha channel is telling it to do), you can select your still in FCP, go under the Modify menu – Alpha Type. Select “None/Ignore.”The other option is to use Photoshop if you have it, open your image, select the Channels tab and delete the channel that says “alpha.” Doing this will make sure that your images don’t try to key.

Thank you. That helps me out a lot. There are definitely plenty of settings that Kona provides that I don’t use and know better than to use. The client definitely didn’t know what he was doing but I was stuck with what he gave me and with him going “see, there is a 30 frame 1080i.” We tried to explain to him but he wasn’t getting it and I thought that maybe I really was missing something since it just got added to the presets.

I appreciate all that everyone has posted on this website. It did feel to me, however, that I was being attacked unfairly as well. I am sorry if others read it as me jumping the gun or overreacting in anyway.

Thank you for you post. However, I am aware that 1080 content is not really NTSC. What I am trying to find out is why Aja added a 1080i30 preset and video format to their driver setting and what the reasoning behind it is.
I do not lie to my clients and I never will. I did this post so that I could make an informed reply to my clients and not try to BS my way through it as you seem to be implying that I would do. I am also fully aware that client’s don’t always know what they are doing and depend on me. Which is why I am trying to figure it out as well. If I wanted to just lie and misguide the client, I wouldn’t bother wasting time trying to research it. I would just lie or BS my way through it.
Also, I was looking in the Final Cut manual as another resource. That is not my only source of information nor was it my first or will it be my last source of information. Again, hence my post on this website. Thank you for your post, but I would have appreciated a more helpful reply and not one making assumptions about me and the way my company and I do business. I believe in integrity and so does my company.

If you are only talking about presets in Final Cut – unless your Panasonic deck came with presets for FCP, then the presets are coming from Final Cut. When I looked at the presets that I have for HD DVCPro 720, it does only show 30 and 60 frames but I could go under the settings for the sequence (before adding any footage) and change the timeline to be drop frame.
Interestingly, the presets that Kona2 gives are for 23.98 and 59.94 and, in the sequence setting, the box to change it to drop or non is greyed out.
