  • Pinting a DVCPro HD 23.98 timeline to DVNTSC 29.98

I have a finished OnLine sequence that consists of DVCProHD 720 60 footage and would like to output it to tape via firewire to a Sony DVNTSC camera. (VX-2000)

How do I go about making this happen?

My first guess is to create a DV timeline and nest the sequence in it but that still leaves me with the wrong timebase (23.98)

It’s not that I don’t know how, I just haven’t learned how to do it yet.

    Thanks for your help.

You are on the right track. You need to create the DV/NTSC sequence with the 29.97 timebase. Then drop the DVCPRO HD sequence into that and render.

This actually needs a bit of clarifying. You said that you have a 720p 60 footage. Your timeline should match your footage so is your timeline 720p 60? If this is the case, then you can just drop it into a 29.97 timeline to output. 60 is 60 fields which basically translates to 30 frames per second or 29.97fps.
But… if you had footage that was at 23.98 and your timeline was at 23.98, you would then need to add a pull down to output it correctly to 29.97 and this would NOT involve just dropping it into a 29.97 timeline. You would leave it in the 23.98 timeline, use and Easy Set-up to output to a 29.97 device and let Final Cut add the pull down. (See page 525-526 in Volume III of the manual.) Chances are you are already setup to do the proper pulldown. This can be found under System Settings, playback control. The typical pulldown pattern is 2:3:2:3.

[Leigh Thomas] “You said that you have a 720p 60 footage. Your timeline should match your footage so is your timeline 720p 60?”

Not really, the SMPTE spec for all 720HD is 60p– that is the what the video stream plays out at.
NO matter what frame rate you shoot at the baseband video is always adding pulldown to make the stream 60p. Baseband HD is always 60 frames or 60 fields.

[Leigh Thomas] “f this is the case, then you can just drop it into a 29.97 timeline to output. “
That is not really a recommended workflow. FCP often throws in odd frame counts when it trys to add pulldown –Why not post in 24p HD and then use a 3rd party output card (I use Kona) and let the hardware add the additional frames, easier to do and the quality is assured.

[Leigh Thomas] “The typical pulldown pattern is 2:3:2:3.”
The pulldown in 720p HD is always 3:2- changing this in hardware is the preferred method- using any other pulldown could result in rejection at the network level.
