Yes I’m curious about this too… especially the use of the MainConcept AVC template. I have Vegas 9a, and it only has two resolutions available for that AVC template (640 and 320). Surely if this codec could do HD, Sony would have included templates for that. How do you get 720p H.264 out of Vegas?

I’m still looking for the optimal settings for Youtube video out of Vegas (both SD and HD).

No replies? I guess I’ll forward this to Sony tech.

I would first check to see what your page file and amount of available physical RAM are at. Right-click on the task bar, go to task manager, and then the Performance tab. Let me know what those numbers are. Then follow all that Steve Cooper said… particularly with disabling anti-virus. What anti-virus are you running?

Now with all that said, if you’re old projects work fine (at least to your liking) but new ones are slow, check your project settings. I’ve had issues where renders started taking a LOT longer, or wouldn’t come out looking too well. Project default settings got changed. Compare your settings of new projects with old ones (you can open two instances of Vegas and go back and forth to check).

If all that doesn’t work, uninstall and reinstall Vegas and see what you get. And by the way, your computer (as far as the specs go that you’ve listed) is fine to run Vegas on. Let us know what happens!

Well at least I figured out one small issue on my own… I guess using the AVI 720p24 intermediate setting. I’m sure there’s some quality loss, and I’m not sure why Vegas can’t render what it can import and use on a timeline. Maybe future versions will support the XDCAM EX stuff better. I’m still up for opinions. Thanks.

This shoulder rig as well as others look pretty cool, but I still see a problem with how to control the camera when using these shoulder mount rigs. Particularly with this Multirig Pro, how do you control the focus, zoom, rec button, etc. when using the shoulder mount system? It seems the best kind of shoulder mount add-on would be something that just extends the length of the camera giving it a balanced secure feel on the shoulder, but still allow your hands to be on the camera controls and lens so everything can be operated as you would with a larger camera. It’s issues such as this that make me lean towards the EX3 more. Sure it doesn’t really sit on the shoulder.. just kind of props against the shoulder, but I can still keep my hands on the camera this way.

It’s a tough debate. Small cameras are easier to tote around, get into smaller spaces, and are cheaper. But it’s hard to mount accessories to them and gives up weight (thus losing inertia for smooth shots) and shoulder mountability.

April 15, 2008 at 5:22 pm in reply to: ProTitler _ pasting attributes ability?

Yes I’ve noticed this lacking feature in the short time I’ve used the new titling tool. Even just a simple copy and paste of a text block isn’t present. If I’ve typed something up, got the font and shadow and all looking good, it’d be nice to copy and paste that text block somewhere else so I can keep the attributes. The only way I’ve seen to do this is add a line of text to the “Collections” then have to drag it down each time I want it. That’s a nice feature, but it’d be nice to simply cut copy and paste as well.

November 13, 2007 at 5:46 pm in reply to: Using Vegas with file server?

Speed is mostly 100Mbit, tho there are 2 gigabit connections. all computers are on a switch, but connect to the WAN and internet via a small router.

I was always impressed by the Avid Unity systems (and honestly there’s very very little that impresses me about Avid). I figured the way Vegas effortlessly handles files, it should be no problem to work from a file server. But if it’s the expert recommendation to keep Vegas work on local machines instead of a network file server, then we’ll focus more on having a backup server that will do automated backup on all machines in the building. Of course, that still doesn’t give a solution for working on any project from any machine without having missing file issues.

The server could also be used as a common collecting point for files as well. A producer can find a picture on the internet, save it to his/her folder on the server, then access the file in Vegas on an edit station (without ever having to move the actual file to the workstation). “Common files” such as clipart, logos, and music library could all be stored on the server and accessed via the network as well. But as I said, this still doesn’t offer a solution for being able to move from one editstation to another, unless media such as captured video is kept on a USB drive. Keep the suggestions coming! Thanks folks.

November 12, 2007 at 9:47 pm in reply to: Sony PMW-EX1 XDCAM Tripod Adaptor?

I’m sure the tripod mount on this camera is the same as the V1 or Z1… just a small screwhole and nothing more. You’ll have to get a tripod that includes a quick release plate, as I’m sure a camera of this size will not come with one like a full size pro camera.

October 3, 2007 at 8:42 pm in reply to: F330 vs HD250 cameras plus lens questions

Nigel, I’ve finally read a review on the PMW-EX1 as well as read the Sony brochure on it. I’m excited about this camera! My only concern will be with workflow and archiving. I read this article on the videoguys website. https://www.videoguys.com.au/pdfs/PMW-EX1-XDCAM-HD-review.pdf
He’s saying here that in order to backup to XDCAM disks using the USB drive, that the MP4 files from the EX1 would have to be recompressed and converted to 1440×1080 MXF files. The only other means of archiving would be to Bluray disks or removeable hard drives (both of which i’m not too happy about). So other than that issue, as well as having no provision to record in SD DVCAM mode, it seems like it’ll be a great camera for our needs here. And for the price, we could buy two or three EX1s for the price of one F330 with a decent lens. I’ll be keeping an eye out to see how workflow and archiving issues are addressed. If you have any more info, please let me know! Thanks.

June 13, 2007 at 11:07 pm in reply to: 24p effect in Vegas??

Good suggestion. I just tried this a moment ago, and while it does yield a 24p file, it’s not quite the effect I’m going for. With this method, there seems to be way too much blurring or field blending (especially with fast motion in the frame). The Avid effect has nice sharp frames with no blending or blurring. In some ways, the output looks better than our DSR-450 camera on its 24p mode. It’s hard to describe, but it really adds a richness to the picture without causing any interlacing, blurring, or blending issues. It does have its drawbacks though. Sometimes there’s a bit of distortion during a cut or dissolve, and other times there may be a bright spot in the picture that becomes pixelated. Not sure why this is.. just the nature of the filter I guess.

Any other thoughts? Surely there are folks out there that want the film cadence of 24p applied to 60i video. I have the Magic Bullet effects, and as great as they are, it still looks like 60i video when it’s done. Thanks for the suggestion though. I’ll keep fiddling with it as well.
