Just got Vegas 9…no native XDCAM EX import??
So I was excited to read that Vegas 9 will now have “native XDCAM EX reading and import”, and I took that to mean we wouldn’t have to use the EX clip browswer to copy the files from our server (where raw EX video is stored as it comes off the cards) to the media drives on the edit computers. I figured Vegas would now be able to browse those BPAV folders and see all the clips. Then from there, they could simply be dragged into the Project Media and used on the timeline without any conversion, file extension or wrapper change, or having to create a duplicate file.
I guess I was wrong. I found the “device explorer” in Vegas, and all it seems to do is browse EX folders or cards and then create copies of the raw EX files to be used in a Vegas project. Aside from having the tool to do this within Vegas (instead of a 2nd app such as Clip Browser), I see no new capabilities. To me when something says “native import”, that means no conversion, copying, or transcoding is necessary. So why can’t Sony make an editing product that can natively import (and EXPORT) files from one of their hot solid state cameras? Maybe I’m doing something wrong.
On this topic, does anyone have any thoughts about how the new JVC solid state cameras work with Vegas? They have the SxS adapter for the HM700, and apparently that’s the only way you can get XDCAM EX with that camera. The HM100 says it does native mp4 XDCAM EX but mentions no adapter needed to record in that format. The other format is some kind of Quicktime flavor that’s apparently only compatible with FCP. What’s with all these solid state cameras that record in these proprietary formats?
Sorry I had to rant. I’m curious about the native EX reading and import though. Thanks!
