  • what script would that be? i see a use for this for condensing down and using a clip from a camera set for timelapse. we have a vx2000 here and have done a bit of timelapse, but it records a minimum of 1/2 second each interval. if i could chop just a single frame out of a long clip, every 1/2 second, it’d be perfect for the timelapse. i’ve done the trimming manually and it’s a pain of course for a long clip. would love to have a script for it!

it will ask which capture utility you want when you launch capture? i saw it do this one time… now whenever i capture, it pulls up only one or the other, not giving me a choice. and the only option i see in preferences just says to use external cap utility or not to use. it’d be nice if it at least gave me a choice, cuz when i capture DV, i’d prefer to use the legacy ext capture program. but obviously for HDV, the internal capture must be used.

haha seeing some good comments here, and ya i’m wary of anything FCP users say as well. and since i wasnt an actual witness to what the guy was doing with FCP, i can’t comment on how “effortlessly” the capture and editing actually was.

i know HDV is a tough format to edit and do anything with.. thats fine. my only gripes really is that vegas 6 was advertised to do HDV editing.. yes it does this, albeit with several steps in between. supposedly this Gearshift plugin makes things easier, but why the need to pay for extra software for simple features that should have been built into vegas? seems like all is needed is a function in vegas that will take all captured HDV clips within a project, build proxies to a determined folder on a drive, and replace all clips in the media pool. also it should allow easy selection between the raw m2t AND proxy file for a clip on the timeline. then in the “print to HDV” dialog, it should have a setting to automatically switch all clips to the original m2t files for PTT. if it has to go through extra processes to edit HDV, thats fine… the software should just make it more streamline. shouldnt have to go to windows explorer and rename folders and move things around, etc.

oh well maybe it’ll get better! thanks again for the replies.

June 30, 2005 at 1:15 am in reply to: 16:9 Widescreen to 4:3 Letterbox PROBLEMS

Taynt3d i knew exactly what your issue was with outputting letterboxed 16:9 in 4:3 format in your first post! dunno where all the confusing came about… its a very simple concept especially for us here in the big state of arkansas. 16:9 is cool but who actually has a 16:9 tv or better yet, even a “regular” tv that’ll recognize 16:9 and scale appropriately?? hahaha modern tvs do it, but the run of the mill old tube tvs people have show only what they’re given. never seen a dv deck either that’ll automatically scale 16:9 into letterbox (or edge crop). supposedly dvd players will do it, but i’ve never seen an actual 16:9 commercially produced dvd. dvds you rent at a store are all 4:3 letterboxed.. and its within the player or tv that you can basically zoom the image to fill a true 16:9 tv screen if thats what it’s played on.

to answer the original question (in case you’re still having issues).. i had that same issue when i first played with 16:9 source material in vegas. make sure under the project properties that “deinterlace method” is set to “blend fields” thats what i use when i simply want to drop some 16:9 clips into a 4:3 project. the clips are automatically letterboxed and with “blend fields” turned on, the output seems to be just as good as running 16:9 footage through a decent ARC or DVE. or you can do a project in 16:9, then when you print to tape just choose regular ntsc dv instead of ntsc dv widescreen. course.. the problem im still having is if i’ve done a wipe or any transition that has graphical elements (colored border), the border doesnt stay within the confines of the 16:9 space! the border extends and fills the 4:3 space. really annoying!

ya i’ve dealt with videoguys. they seem to have some good system testing results published on their website. i would like to build my own custom system. does anyone have mobo/proc/ram suggestions? what about the 422 control or 5.1 surround monitor system? and the big question… what do i need in order to do HDV editing? last i heard.. vegas 6 can’t do it that well and has to use 3rd party conversion programs to create proxies, then have the original m2t files dropped back in for final render. sounds like a pain to me. supposedtly the newest versions of avid xpress pro can edit HDV natively.

but yes i’ll talk to someone at videoguys as well. does anyone on here build their own systems anymore? i wouldnt mind going through a dealer for a turnkey, but i have very specific requests. thanks for suggestions!

I put this post on the other forum quite a while ago and have received no replies. kinda disappointing. if anything, can someone at least suggest a great dealer or someone knowledgeable about this stuff to refer me to? thanks in advance

I originally had plans to build a Vegas system that would handle and edit dvcpro50 material. But in thinking it over, and budgetary restraints, I think we’ll stick with DVCAM and continue editing dv25 material. Soooo… I’d like to totally rebuild (or just flat out build new) a system that will run Vegas 6 along with Xpress Pro (software only). Also, a compliment of graphics/authoring/audio software will run on this machine. To build a system from ground up, what dual processor motherboards should I look for? Keep in mind I’d like to run Xpress pro on this same machine, and I know it’s less forgiving than Vegas when it comes to configurations.

I’d like to run dual 19″ lcd monitors connected via DVI. What video card should i look for? It probably has to be something nVidia cuz thats what xpress pro likes.

Do I need a raid configuration, or will large SATA drives be good enough? I’d like a seperate system drive, audio/projects/scratch disk, and dedicated drive(s) for video.

Having rs-422 control of a deck would be nice (either betaSP or svhs deck). Is a decklink card needed for that? For the price of those decklink cards, it’d be nice to have one anyway that can do SDI or component i/o for Vegas.

The system should be able to edit HDV material from a Z1 camera. what are people using as HD video monitors? lcd?

Also, I wanted to be able to do 5.1 dolby sound mixing and output. what kind of soundcard and speaker system would I need to do this?

…so we have mobo/processors, video card, rs-422 control, raid or single drives, and 5.1 mixing suggestions needed. If I knew a knowledgeable dealer for Vegas, I’d just call that person. But suggestions I can get here would be great! thanks again

another thing to do is use track compression (and eq if you need). i use this almost all the time, especially for any dialog voice tracks. realtime audio compressor… yet another great feature! (try that in avid xpress)

May 20, 2005 at 5:08 pm in reply to: 16×9 letterboxed for 4×3, settings?

ok so i build and work with the project as a 16×9 project, but when i print to tape, there is an option for doing it 4×3 thus doing it letterbox? will the quality still be very good? ill take a looksee and give it a try. and by this pull down window you speak of… usually i print to tape from the timeline. ive never seen any pull down window except “print to tape” under “tools.”

May 9, 2005 at 11:06 pm in reply to: Will new DSR-450WS have SDI or component out?

ANYONE have ANY clue when the dsr-450 will be available? i’ve not gotten a straight answer from anyone yet, and cant find anything on the net about it. i really am interested in this camera! does it have true progressive scan CCDs?? i was looking at the sdx-900 for our work here, but dang its so expensive for what it does… this 450 would be almost half the price. so it sounds like a killer camera esp if it has progressive ccds for real 24p and 30p recording.

May 9, 2005 at 4:18 pm in reply to: Vegas and DVCpro50??

Ok sorry for being dense and confused here, but how would a matrox product work with vegas? What do you use to capture and print to tape? I’ve heard of the decklink stuff being used for uncompressed SDI, but is this any different (better or worse) than this matrox card you talk about?

So all in all what would be a great system as far as using vegas with dv50 material? I’m going to upgrade our main system here and have a pretty generous budget. Will i need scsi drives? Obviously editing dv material is no problem, but i want to build a nice system that can handle the DV50 material. Will i still get realtime preview on an external monitor? Does it still preview transitions and effects on the monitor? Any advice would be great! thanks a bunch
