  • 16×9 letterboxed for 4×3, settings?

with new upgrades and equipment on the horizon for us at this tv station, i’d like to do some work with 16×9 cameras that we’ll have… however as everyone well knows, MOST people still have 4×3 tv sets at home. so for many things we’ll retain the look of widescreen, but letterbox it so it displays correctly on regular tvs. i have some 16×9 footage shot on an ikegami camera with dvcam, captured it into vegas, and to my surprise, vegas automatically letterboxes the clips (showing them in their correct aspect) on the tv monitor here. they look somewhat ok, aren’t playing back at full 30fps. when i printed to tape a few clips, i was quite disappointed. there’s a lot of interlace artifacts and looks nothing like the quality of the original clips. if i switch the project properties to ntsc DV 16×9, the quality is fine of course, but are stretched on a regular tv screen.

are there any special settings i need to use when using 16×9 footage, but want the whole project letterboxed so it shows on any regular 4×3 tv? we did a promo for the station with that same camera in 16×9, edited in avid xpress pro, and it came out looking great… just how the original footage looked, only letterboxed for regular tvs. thoughts? thanks a bunch

When you print to tape, choose standard NTSC DV (Not Widscreen) from the pull down window. This will print to tape letter boxed..

ok so i build and work with the project as a 16×9 project, but when i print to tape, there is an option for doing it 4×3 thus doing it letterbox? will the quality still be very good? ill take a looksee and give it a try. and by this pull down window you speak of… usually i print to tape from the timeline. ive never seen any pull down window except “print to tape” under “tools.”

Did you ever have any success? And if so, how’d you achieve it?
