  • Problem Normalizing Audio

Posted by Kevin Mccarthy on June 2, 2005 at 1:58 pm

I’m doing a project of 40+ clips recorded in left channel only (many speakers at a podium). I have combined the audio track to make it a momo track. I “selected to the end” on the audio track and attempted to normalize the track. Some clips did normalize, others did not. the clips that did not normalize would return to the original level if I clicked off normaization but when I tried to normalize them individually they had noe audio at all! I salavaged the project by not normalizing any clips and inserting an audio envelope. I then made all level adjustments manually. Any suggesations?

That sometimes happens and I don’t know why. Most of the time normalizing works but sometimes the audio disappears.

Normalizing really isn’t very good anyway. All it will do is take your LOUDEST point and raise that to the specified level. Have one cough or loud noise and it’s been rendered useless anyway. I prefer your solution of using a volume envelope instead.

If you really want to normalize, try using Sound Forge instead. It can do the job much better with more options.

What about that Wve Hammer Loudness effect? For a down & dirty project the audio envelope is a very time consuming solution to varied levels of volume.
Also, thanks for the quick response. I thought I was going crazy!

I thought that Wave Hammer came with Sound Forge. If you have that, why not use the Normalize in SF? I didn’t see a “Loudness” setting in Wave Hammer. Perhaps you could point me to what you’re seeing. But you could always just try it and let us know how it works.

another thing to do is use track compression (and eq if you need). i use this almost all the time, especially for any dialog voice tracks. realtime audio compressor… yet another great feature! (try that in avid xpress)

i picked up Douglas Spotted Eagle’s vegas training book which includes a project/info cd.It’s supposed to contain a Java script to normalize a whole project. The file name is normalizeall.js. I can’t find it on the disk that came with my book so haven’t used it. Was wondering if anyone has used it, and can share it? Maybe can recommend one to use in Vegas Pro 8?…Thanks
