If you do this on a regular basis, it would benefit you to make a Motion template and publish it to the effects browser in FCPX.

However, all you need to do is add the unmodified compound clip to the timeline, then select it in the timeline. Go the Clip menu > Reference New Parent Clip. This makes an independent copy of the compound clip. That is, any changes you make to the this new compound clip do not affect the original compound clip in the event browser or any other project.

You don’t actually “open” Final Cut Pro projects, per se. Quit FCPX. Place the entire project folder into “Final Cut Projects” in the root of your external drive, or if you’re using the internal system drive (which you shouldn’t be) in ~/Movies/Final Cut Projects. Then re-open Final Cut and you should see the project in your project library.

48 kHz is standard to the DVD spec. FCP should do the sample rate conversion for you. Otherwise, the audio (or maybe the whole disc) will most likely not work in a standard DVD player.

Add the clip(s) to a compound clip and add the transition within the compound.

Set Clip Range (X) works in the event browser. Hold your cursor over the clip and hit X. It will range select the entire clip. The equivalent in the timeline is the C key (by default).

Do you mean you synchronized them in the event library, then dragged them to the timeline? I always “Break Apart Clip Items” whenever I have synced clips. Yeah, it’s less organized, but it keeps FCP from getting bogged down. Until Apple fixes this, I’ll keep applying the workaround.

  • It’s really kind of a dropzone/background kind of thing. It definitely makes it easier to insert a clip at the beginning of the timeline instead of it mistakenly thinking you’re trying to replace the existing first clip.

Have you tried dragging the subtitle you want to move above the other subtitle in the timeline? That should place the desired subtitle layer on top so you can select it.

As for the second point, you could easily achieve this effect using the “Quiver” behavior in Motion. If you don’t have Motion, I’m sure someone has made it available in a template.

Why not edit to the audio without using a compound clip and then compound it later?

If you don’t want to do that, I can only think of one way and it’s not much more convenient. You could try using markers to show particular edit points of your audio within the compound clip.
