FCPX: Why is there a blank gray space in front of my storyline?

Grab the “scroll pill” at the bottom of the storyline window and drag it right until the space is gone.

When you drag it back left, the empty space should be gone.

One major difference in X compared to most editors is that there really isn’t a default “zero” point on your timeline. You can add content as easily BEFORE any clip as after it – and that includes your very first clip.

So if you want to put something “before” your first clip – just drag it there and when the yellow marker lights up on front of your first clip, dropping the grabbed clip will dynamically insert the space necessary to pop in the new content.

Odd at first, but it starts making a whole lot of sense when you come to realize that your first clip actually works consistently like every other clip on your timeline. Work behind, work in front, doesn’t matter. It all works the same.

Thanks for the tip. It’s funny, but part of the space stays on the screen. It’s only a small part, so it doesn’t really matter.

It’s really kind of a dropzone/background kind of thing. It definitely makes it easier to insert a clip at the beginning of the timeline instead of it mistakenly thinking you’re trying to replace the existing first clip.
