Your also going to want your Raid to be in one enclosure with a hardware raid controller. You can stripe a raid across multiple external drives but it can get clunky and introduce problems that you will not have with a dedicated RAID controller. Sure they are a tad bit more expensive but worth it.

Try changing the keyframes to “Linear” and see if you get the same result.

If you are encoding files to be hosted on a client’s website (or your own), each host will have specifics on files types and sizes. You should contact your client’s host to get the requirements before you waste a lot of time and effort.

As far as the basics go, PrPro (Media Encoder) has loads of great presets that will get you started in the right ballpark, then it is just tweaking to obtain the best encode.

    Hi Robert,

What you are referencing is what is known as Metamerism Failure. This happens when we view different displays with different spectral distributions in close proximity to each other. This short video might help shed some light on the subject as well as provide a brief description of what you can expect from each of the FSI models in relation to their specific types of spectral distribution.

    https://www.flandersscientific.com/index/tech_resources.html

As far as objective measurement go, FSI uses over $50,000 worth of industry standard equipment to align and measure each unit. We start with a Minolta CS2000 Spectroraditiometer to measure the panels native response curves and then create model specific offsets that are input into a Minolta CA310 Colorimeter to align each unit to industry standards. We then use a Photo research PR655 with a 5 nanometer bandwitdh option to measure the alignment. The link below will take you to the tech resources on the FSI website and give you the information in much greater detail.

We do have quite a few customers who use the LM2461W in high end finishing suites, using Barco’s and Christie’s, that swear by that unit being as close to a perfect match to their projectors as they have seen with an LCD monitor.

You bring up good points and this is not a sales pitch, I’m just sharing information and I’m sure others here may have more valuable insight on their actual use of the FSI monitors in their suites.

  • I never export to ProRes from PrP or AME as the quality is never as good as the original. Anytime I need a ProRes file I use FCP7.

As far as the bitrate goes, that depends on what your deliverable size requirements are, length of program, do you need VBR or CBR ect. best thing to do is start with the presets and play with the settings from there to get the optimal encode.

Really the thing is, If you are already using particular codec there would be no need to re encode it to that codec. You will see a quality loss and that is why when you need to export a prores file you would want to use FCP7 and export the native file.

  • You might see better spatial results if you do the scaling in AME as part of the encode. As far as speed increases I couldn’t say one way or another because this is not a workflow that I use. I do however always let the encoding tool, AME, Compressor, Episode ect do the scaling of the final output.

  • Is there any reason why you do not want Adobe Media encoder to do the heavy lifting (Compression) for the PAL DVD MPEG-2 files?

  • NTSC and PAL do not really exist in HD video. Most folks refer to them this way because of the frame rate, but it is not correct for a spec to be HD and PAL. If you are unfamiliar with compressor I would start with the stock settings and encode a small portion of the most likely footage where you would see compression artifacts ie fast motion, hard lines ect. and then adjust the parameters until that section looks good.

Compression and compressor are to big in scope to give you a tutorial in a forum post and to be honest every piece of video is unique and may require custom settings to optimize the encode. The stock settings in compressor are a good start. The is also a manual that comes with the software that will describe what each of the settings are.

Start with the MPEG2 program stream and then customize the settings in the inspector tab. Make sure you save your settings.

  • You should use compressor, as you will have more control to optimize the encode.
