  • Do you have bars, from the recording of the project, to test on the scopes?

The best thing that you can do for yourself regarding this issue would be to export a small section of your clip (preferably one that has some motion or txt) and run some test passes with compressor making note of your various settings. The presets are a good place to start, but there is no “cookie cutter” setting for compressing video. Each and every video is different and your compression settings will be as well.

The more you dig into the program the more familiar you will become with what settings will need to be applied for particular situations. Stay away from suggestions like “if you do this, it will turn out great” It might, but what if it doesn’t. A previous poster recommended that you set your compression settings at 8MBs. But he did this without knowing the specs of your video. This data rate, in my opinion, is to high for most situations and does not leave enough headroom in the bitstream . Even in CBR. The problem is not that the disc cannot handle the data rate, rather the player may not be able to decode it. I would stick with something lower and massage your compression settings until you hit a sweet spot.

I know all to well, in a busy post situation that time is of the essence, but the skills you will gain will make you more valuable in the future.

BTW, if you ever see an unreasonable time in the batch window. cancel the encoding, quit and reboot the program. Chances are you would wait for 11 days and not have anything good to show for it.

  • What are you using for your reference image? In order to check the calibration you will need something definitive to calibrate to.

June 11, 2010 at 12:45 pm in reply to: Annoying issue when trimming clips

It took more time to post how annoying it is to trim clips in FCP than it would have to actually trimmed them, now matter which method you use. FCP does a good job of allowing users multiple ways of performing task based upon your knowledge of the app and your comfortability factor with whatever method you choose to use. In the end you still wind up with the edit you need. I edit with FCP, AVID, Media 100 ect. and each suite has its own positives and negatives. But, I am paid to produce a final product on what ever system I am hired to work on so I learn how to drive each instead of complain that my corolla does not perform like my Jag.

I use “select/ctrl+v/del” and move on.

I’m with Jeremy, move the media off the card before you transfer.

In the L&T window. crtl+click on the card name and select create disk archive. this will create a disk image of the card, which is essentially your backup. Then transfer the media from the disk image.

What class of cards are you using?

March 30, 2010 at 2:08 pm in reply to: “Close Gap” Shortcut – FCP 7

After it stops working, look in your “keyboard layouts” to confirm that it is still an active shortcut. If not re-create it. You can also use Opt+G to move a highlighted selection backwards to close a gap or Shift+G to move a highlighted selection forward to close a gap.

I have not had any trouble using it with FCP7.

A bad habit is to regularly highlight entire sections of regions and drag them around with the mouse. If you ever work in another editing system such as Avid, you will end up destroying your timeline. Not to mention it wastes a lot of time.

In regards to erasing the source media. When you are using FCP log & transfer, your first step is to create a disk image of your card. Then you will transfer all of your footage ( which includes timecode) from your disk image.

One way the 7D is superior to the 550D is the ability to choose incremental ISO speeds

May 30, 2008 at 3:21 am in reply to: how many hours billable work do you do?

I cut a 30 min. program every week and bill 30 to 40 hours depending on the complexity of the edit. I figure that anytime I am in my edit suite or at my desk doing business related activities, I am on the clock. This also includes delivery of the material and any production work I do at the clients office. I only charge 1/2 time for renders and compression passes. Ocassionaly I will throw in some Value Added “WOW” to keep my shows at the top of the pile. It helps for job security but mostly for self indulgence.

I use MacFreelance. Simple interface, easy to set up and comes with a timer for tracking and logging hours while I’s sitting at my edit desk.
