    I have always gone one route when encoding ProRes HQ 1920×1080 files to Mpeg2 720×576 for use in Encore.

    1) Create a new sequence in Premiere CS5 (DV widescreen 48k),drop the ProRes file on to the timeline and reduce the scale by 55%, then render out with both “Render at max depth/scaling” ticked.
    I’m please with the end results, usually 18 hours later on a 90min film, but in the search to reducing any aliasing in the usual shots (blinds, french sweaters etc) should I go a difference route?

    Does anyone place the HD file on a HD timeline and render straight from that just using the output cropping tool to elimate the pillarboxing?

    Is there any reason why you do not want Adobe Media encoder to do the heavy lifting (Compression) for the PAL DVD MPEG-2 files?

    Thanks Kris,

    I do let AME do all the heavy lifting, I just use Premiere to scale it down and do any 24 to 25fps adjustments I need to before sending it to the queue in AME.

    You might see better spatial results if you do the scaling in AME as part of the encode. As far as speed increases I couldn’t say one way or another because this is not a workflow that I use. I do however always let the encoding tool, AME, Compressor, Episode ect do the scaling of the final output.

    Why not send your HD sequence straight to Encore (via Dynamic Link)? This will use AME to do the scaling.

    You still have to crop the top/bottom of a 1920×1080 frame to get a 720×576 (1.46)frame without any pillarboxing, 15 top and bottom in the crop function on the source/encode window seems to do the trick.
