January 15, 2013 at 5:27 pm in reply to: Comp made in AE does not look the same in PP

tom, yo will have to give us more information. Is it an exported clip or dynamic linked? are you looking at it on your computer monitor or your ref monitor? what is your bit depth in the AE comp?

ther could be many reasons why the image looks different in PrPro than in AE.

This is not part of my workflow as I don’t deliver on DVD’s much anymore, but you would export to media encoder via the queue, from the presets panel on the right choose DVD and Blu-ray and then select the preset that you want to start with. From there you can click on the slider icon at the top of the preset panel to adjust your encoding options and then save a new preset.

someone with more experience with this workflow may have some better advice. good luck.

Are you sending your sequence directly to Encore via dynamic link or compressing and muxing in Adobe Media Encoder first?

January 10, 2013 at 9:53 pm in reply to: Transferring big files

Hi Todd, I use MediaFire Pro only when I have to. You can move files up to 2GB i think, and you can only pay for a month. If I have many large files then need to go to a client, I’ll upgrade my regular account for $10 move the files and then downgrade after the fact. The drawback is that your client will also have to have a media fire acct. which can get complicated. That is why I only use it if I have to.

I just uploaded some files 1.5Gb files to a clients shared google drive folder and that seemed to work very well.

Best cast is they purchase space and FTP the files to their host

December 28, 2012 at 5:52 pm in reply to: In Search Of … A Better H.264 to ProRes Workflow

I can’t speak to this directly since it is not my workflow and not something that I do, but my guess is that it would have to do with time savings outputting directly to a unit that records native ProRes in real time vs. encoding through AME.

Walter outlines his workflow here and has more details in other post on his blog https://www.biscardicreative.com/blog/

One of the folks here (who has their pic on the leader board) cuts different formats natively in PrPro, then outputs the timeline by laying it back to an AJA KiPro recording in ProRes and then imports that file into Resolve using the scene detect feature. This give him realtime lossless PreRes encoding and a file that works great in Resolve with a min of encoding time.

I know not everyone has a KiPro at their disposal, I am just offering it up as an alternative to show that depending on your needs there are options that may not seem so conventional.

December 28, 2012 at 3:24 pm in reply to: Can scrubbing avchd (h.264) footage be better?

The keywords there are “Render” and “Exporting.” You are comparing apples to oranges as “rendering in PrPro is only for the video preview files and has nothing to do with exporting the file.

In FCP7 you have to render the footage before you export (or not). if you do not you will not see a preview and exporting will render the footage on output, even if it is ProRes. In PrPro there is no “Export same as source” as all export and final rendering is done vie Adobe Media Encoder either direct from PrPro or from the queue through the AME application.

Because of the Mercury engin it is not necessary to pre render footage just to see it in your timeline and the MPE is actually much faster at encoding than direct export or Compresser could ever dream of, unless you need a native ProRes file. Then your best bet would be to stick with FCP7 because if your are working with a ProRes file in PrPro, Adobe Media Encoder will actually re-compress and encode the ProRes file into a ProRes file. You may not notice any perceptible visual difference in the file but you are wasting time by re encoding.

The best format really depends on your machine. I cut on a MPB with 16Mb of RAM with scratch media on a thunderbolt drive and I can cut about 2 layers with gfx and effects with H.264/Mp4 material in real time using fractional resolution.

I have seen blazing speeds coming off a MPB with a the new Smalltree box. faster than I could ever hope to get and the folks who are using towers that benefit from more RAM are doing even better. Your question is subjective and really depends on your machine.

December 27, 2012 at 2:20 pm in reply to: Upgrade new MBP to 8GB or 16GB RAM?

    Hi Trevor,

You will want to go with the 16gig upgrade path if you are planning on using the machine for PrPro. I believe OWC has a solution. I have 16 in my MPB 15″ i7 and it works great.
