Thanks for your reply. I’ll look into that brand. As for the embedded audio, yes the video and audio all travel down the same cable. I capture through the AJA I/O using the SDI input and can select any of the up to 4 channels of audio recorded on the tape. Same is true for output to tape. I go straight from the AJA I/O into the SDI in of the Digital Betacam deck. I have output up to 4 channels simultaneously from FCP to Digibeta (sometimes we do several language editions of the same show).
Hope this helps.

Thanks guys. I suspected I needed to go the mixer route. The truth is I’m just over to FCP since August after years on Media 100 where everything was monitored through the M100 breakout box directly into the amp.
I don’t want to go ahead in a “crazy” fashion so I was wondering who can recommend a decent mixer – thanks for your tip regarding this, Lee. I’ll look into the one you mention. What is anybody else using? Do I need to give more info? This has happened to me too a couple of times for no apparent reason. There was clearly audio on the source (I can hear it in the viewer!) but the audio source indicators in the timeline are missing and even if I try to edit the clip -(video and audio) into the timeline- there is no audio clip – as if it didn’t exist. I ended up selecting the entire sequence (command+A) and copy and pasting the entire thing into a new sequence. The indicators reappeared in the new sequence. I still don’t know what caused the problem, but it’s a workaround in a pinch.

My humble apologies. I’ll read more closely the next time. I stopped before getting to the bottom of the list. I have always worked with prestriped tapes and soley insert editing from an NLE because I was under the (perhaps false) impression that it was a more secure way of ensuring perfect timecode on master tapes. Thanks for the food for thought.

I have been using TepX by Imagine Products ( http://www.imagineproducts.com ) for years now. It will do just what you’re asking, plus it can be commanded and controlled vias RS422 cable which picks up your timecode automatically. It’s a very worthwhile investment. Just my experience.
Hope this helps,

You can also stipe the tape using the internal signal generator of the deck itself (bars, tone, black) if you don’t want to tie up your Mac to give it give you the signal. It’s easy to do and as I say doesn’t tie up your computer.
Just my personal experience and preference.

What I ended up doing is applying a deinterlace filter on the clip in question and that seemed to help quite a bit. It’s located in the FCP effects folder “video”. I’ve seen other software reccommended for slo-mo, but since applying that filter seemed to clear up the issue I didn’t pursue the extra expense route.
Hope this helps,

Good advice. I’ll do that. Your explanation makes sense too. Thanks, Walter.
