December 10, 2005 at 2:35 amYou need to set the TC Generator ON THE DECK.
There is a keystroke and Jog-Dial routine to set it that goes along the lines of the following:
Switch deck to LOCAL
Switch TC switch to PRESET
Hit HOLD button
Hit RESET button
Hit Jog button
Rotate Jog Dial to proper TC Segment
Hold in Jog button
Rotate Dial proper TC Number (59)
Release Jog button
Rotate Jog Dial to proper TC Segment
Hold in Jog button
Rotate Dial proper TC Number (10)
Release Jog button
Hit SET
Set Incoming signal of Bars & Tone
Put in tape
Hit Record
When you’ve laid enough B&T hit stop.
Switch TC switch to PRESET
Switch deck to REMOTE CONTROLUse FCP “Edit to Tape” to start the program at proper TC (1:00:00:00).
This is all from memory so it might be a bit “off” but the idea is very close.
Its like trying to put in PRINT “How to tie a shoelace”.
It sounds very complex, but for those of us who do it frequently, its almost automatic. -

December 10, 2005 at 4:30 amScott- Matte is right on but I have to throw in my two cents in case you are new at it. Before you take it out of ‘local’ rewind the tape ’till you see the bars/or Black and time code then go to ‘remote’. Then
use ‘assemble edit’ from final cut edit to tape.

December 10, 2005 at 2:48 pmYou can also stipe the tape using the internal signal generator of the deck itself (bars, tone, black) if you don’t want to tie up your Mac to give it give you the signal. It’s easy to do and as I say doesn’t tie up your computer.
Just my personal experience and preference.

Please re-read my post.
That’s exactly what I said. There is no need to FULLY STRIPE a digital tape.
Just record Bars & Tone for about a minute, then assemble from the source.

December 10, 2005 at 6:06 pmMy humble apologies. I’ll read more closely the next time. I stopped before getting to the bottom of the list. I have always worked with prestriped tapes and soley insert editing from an NLE because I was under the (perhaps false) impression that it was a more secure way of ensuring perfect timecode on master tapes. Thanks for the food for thought.

December 10, 2005 at 6:19 pmOr just use the FCP ETT function for Black And Code the tape. It takes no time at all to stripe a minute or two at the head of the tape. No need to do such a manual process. Just click the Black&Code button in the ETT window and set the desired timecode. FCP will do the rest.

December 11, 2005 at 3:17 pmDoes that work? I’ve never done that nor realized that it was possible. Where is the time-code generated from?

December 11, 2005 at 5:50 pmThis is actually the easiest and best way to stripe. FCP generates the TC.

December 11, 2005 at 8:01 pmActually, FCP doesn’t generate TC at all. For years we have asked for that as a feature, but it’s still a no go. What FCP does do is send the TC start point down the RS-422 to the deck and the deck generates the TC.
