Hi Jerry,
I went through a similar kind of switch a while back. I had used MC and FCP 7 for over 21 years. No looking back now:)
A few things to remember
-Unlearn whatever you know about NLEs (track based NLEs like PrPro, FCP 7 or MC)
-DO NOT try to make FCP X work like FCP 7/PrPro etc. It is a completely different way of editing on a NLE.
-Stop hitting command S to save every few minutes (you don’t have to:)
-This is one NLE for which you NEED a tutorial.
It is going to be frustrating for a while and then you’ll get it. And then you’ll wonder why you waited this long to make the switch:)
I bought Ripple Training’s tutorials. There is a popular free one. I think it’s called Izzy’s. But I am super happy with Ripple:)
I’ve completely stopped using FCP 7 and MC foe over 2 years now. I still use PrPro CC for a particular client where I need tracks. For everything else, FCPX:) It’s a super fast and fun NLE to use.
And there are some really cool plugins for X.
Stick with it, you’ll love it.

Like Shane said, underpowered machine.
i7 is much, much better for video editing. At least 16 GB RAM. 24 is better.
I’d recommend a more powerful 4 GB GPU.
And, are you playing footage form your internal OS drive? For best performance, store your media on external Thunderbolt RAID 5 array. Like a Pegasus R4/R6 or the OWC array.

+1 to what Jeff said. Hawaiki keer inside FCP X is a great tool. The presets are usually good enough for a good key, but you can tweak the settings to get an amazing end product. Totally worth the cost:)

And if you can wait one more month, MBPs and iMacs would be upgraded with faster processors:) If you can’t wait, then like what Dan says, go with the best specced iMac 5K 27″.

I usually use FCP X or PrPro but had to use Avid a few months back at a client’s place. There is a flicker removal filter in MC that works really well. AM not sure if it was a third party plugin or a built in filter though.

I use a Sound devices USB Pre2 for recording VO with a Heil sound Pro 40 mic and it’s been rock solid.
