checkout andrew kramer’s tutorial on 3d stroke effect w/o a plugin.

he uses cc particle world to create a 3d stroke effect. i think you could adapt that pretty well to more of a brush effect… maybe similar to his ipod nano tutorial, which used particular.

August 28, 2007 at 6:16 pm in reply to: rendering then getting huge file sizes?

with premiere there are ways to import the ae project to avoid rendering in ae… i’m not sure of the exact workflow or the limitations it might have. check the help file or manual for workflow between adobe applications. if you have further questions, try searching here for premiere after effects workflow and post if you have any questions….

if you want to render, try rendering to the codec that you are working in in premiere. so, if you are setup to work in dv25 in premiere, render out dv25 in ae… note there are a few different flavors of dv.

also, many people swear by photo jpeg at a higher quality setting…

if you reimport as an image sequence, you can set the interpret footage to the frame rate (say 10fps), then you can put that into a 29.97 comp and ae will fill the gaps with duplicate frames, or you could work in a 10fps comp, but render to 29.97 and ae should do the same thing to the render.

you could also drag the images in and then drag them on the comp icon, ae should ask what to do witht he images. set it to make singel comp, set the frame duration of each image and to sequence them.

August 28, 2007 at 3:11 pm in reply to: Flocking Text to form a Shape

ayatoweb.com has several tutorials that involve text or partcles that come together to form an image (or break apart in to particles). he often uses text as a particle. most of them are towards the bottom of the page.

i think if you were to put your phrases, evenly spaced, into a grid, you could then try card dance to break the ‘phrase grid’ up. you can use a n image map to displace and rotate the phrase cards, animating the multiplier to have them come together.

you could also use card wipe, and animate the jitter properties.

you can use shatter, but you would need a custom shatter map of the phrases, and i’m not sure how you could keep each phrase together….

there are distortion effects like turbulent displace and displacement map (displacement map requires a gradient map).

i think i might try turbulent displace. it will displace the whole image with a similar ‘turbulance’, so if you want it more irregular distortion, you may want to try and separate your image into a few pieces and apply the effect with different parameters to each piece.

hey, now that’s pretty impressive for ae… i did a similar effect years ago in cinema4d.

    thanks dave.

well cc cylinder will wrap a flat layer (film strip texture) around a cylinder, but you won’t be able to unwrap it from the reel. i think you will need to do that with another flat film strip and use a track matte to hide the flat strip where it joins the strip on the reel as it unwinds

    did that make sense?

the tricky part will be matching the rate for the two separate film strips. but if the strips were the same length, when the reel spins 360 degrees the other strip would move it entire length… so if the film needs to be 200 pixels to reveal ‘studios,’ but the rel needed a strip that was 400 pixels, then the film wrap rotation would be 180 degrees and the flat film move would the 200 px. well it should at least get you in the ball park.

August 28, 2007 at 1:55 pm in reply to: Effects not interlacing right

it shouldn’t matter if the interpret footage is set to separate fields or not if you are rendering back to fields, putting fields back in will reinterlace the footage even if separate fields was set (i generally work this way). and by your mention that when you rendered w/o fields you saw interlacing in the background footage, that would indicate that you weren’t separating fields for that footage anyway.

so i think there is something else going on here… can you post a sample of the two renders?

i believe a pal dvd will need to be 720×576 with a 1.07 par or a 1.42 par (for widescreen). i don’t think any player would be able to play a dvd that was not 720×576 (if you can even create one). so you will need to make yours conform to that standard, and the ‘player’ (or extra hardware) will expand it back out to fill two screens.

so working with your 1440×576 comp is a good way to go, but then you will need to take it (or a render of it) and drop it into a standard pal preset, but scaling the width to fit the standard pal comp. it will look squeezed, but the extra hardware on the play out side should stretch it back out and make it look normal.

you can create a 720×576 comp with a custom par, but you will need to write a script to do so, i don’t know anyway to choose any other par but the preset ones in ae. i also don’t know how a player might react if it saw a non-standard par dvd.

what are you expected to deliver? media file on a hardrive or a standard dvd, 2 dvds?

if it is one dvd that the hardware is stretching over two monitors, then ultimately you will be working in a standard pal preset. you can work in a double wide comp, but then drop it into a standard preset and scale width to fit for the final render.

if it is two dvds, then spliting the double wide comp into 2 standard comps for final render, as mentioned, would be good way to go.

if it is a file on a hard drive, then you’ll want to know more about the hardware and the data rates taht they can playback. you could work with a standard pal par, but it will depend on their set up.
