I’ve run it on the MacBook from 2 generations ago (black) and it works ok. If you have plug-ins that use OpenGL to speed up their rendering it might not work.

It is very difficult though to work at size screen with all the menus.

Understood, but is there a way to break that rule?

I did try the collapse transformation switch. That works apparently only in one composition. If I put that sub composition in another composition, it does not hold. Switching on the collapse transformation on the sub composition layer does not do anything that I can tell.

What are the other benefits other than cost for a Linux version? I wonder if you did this, how would you make sure there was equal support for video card drivers that would interact not only with Linux but with programs like AE and Premiere.

Why not animate all your countries appear and disappearing on the flat map first in accordance with your timing. Render that out as a movie and then wrap that movie in CC sphere. Then rotate the sphere in accordance with your time of your fade in and out of the map pieces?
You may need to work 2x the size for the map part so you can zoom in on your sphere, but I would think the processing issues you are having would be smaller for you are dealing with one layer and one sphere as opposed to many layers working within the sphere.

Are you doing anything else with this country layer? I just tried to do a simple test and smart object layers converted to 3D layers in photoshop does not come into AE as a precomp that can work independently.
If you have a map of the world you could make that into a sphere in photoshop to rotate in AE.
Just make another layer with your country outline and place that where it is supposed to go on the earth and combine for AE.
Basically do a little pre-planing in PS before you start to rotate in AE.

Sorry. If you not too familar with Photoshop, you can combine a bunch of layers into one layer into what is called a smart object. When you double click that smart object layer a window opens that shows a new image with all those layers. Sorta like a precomp.
Going back to the smart object layer you can make a new shape from that layer into a sphere.
Save the photoshop document and open it in AE making sure you recognize 3D objects from photoshop
Over at Planetphotoshop dot com, Corey Barker has a brand new tutorial on making 3D billiards in PS CS4 Extended that might help.
