We are gonna need more info, but did you go into log and transfer prefs and uncheck remove duplicate frames and advanced pulldown? That is usually the first place I go when there is a prob with log and transfer. Do you copy the folders from the cam and then try to log and trans? Do you have enough hd space? Are you using usb or going to internal? Trash your prefs and restart fc and try again. Use easy setup to set your project to the right format, double-check your scratch disks. Not sure if it’s exactly like the p2 but did you copy all the files from the card and does it have a lastclip.txt associated with it? I’ve seen problems with that file gone when trying to transcode.

No, I think you have gone mad, at least as far as fc7 is concerned. I just tried it and it is an option, try command-E and see if that works. Make sure the viewer is selected though. (and I’m sure it is) If that doesn’t do it, quit fc, trash your prefs files and restart fc and see if that works.

Have you tried it? No harm in trying, just set your sequence settings first for the hd720p60 and do not let fc auto conform when you drop the canon in. I have been telling our students to use 1 seq setting and use both flavors and I have yet to hear about the need to render preview. Even when the pro res is 1920 and the p2 is 1280.

Well, there are some options here and I speak from experience. I shot some really clean and nicely balanced miniDV footage before and just dropped it in a 1280 timeline and fcp upscaled it just fine. I have also tried the upscaling feature in Boris and again, with nice clean footage it didn’t come out that bad. Tried it in AE for a kick and it didn’t look good at all. Now if your footage is not clean and crisp you are in trouble, every ounce of noise is tripled in size and could make everything worse. Even though blu-ray players should be able to play your sd dvd just fine they might not have the upscaling feature (not using proper cords?) and those play sd really nicely, I mean really nice. Every store purchased dvd I have looks excellent on a hdtv when using upscaling but your film might need some treatment or look depending on what it looks like after you manually upscale it coming from such a compression. Why not try a minute of it in a timeline, and in compressor (I have had luck sometimes with that too) but with dv cam it’s interlaced right? Bad for upscaling, hd is the reverse of it and I see that problem on documentaries all the time. If you didn’t make a hd master can’t you treat the project as offline and try to reconnect with a higher resolution? If you can transfer to hd and use either xml or cinema tools. And dvd’s are supposed to conform to 29.97 internally right? So at 23.976 or what have you, that all films are mastered to, the player itself plays back according to the standards of ntsc. (Not 100% sure on that last one but remember reading it multiple times somewhere.)

I usually have just placed it in a sd timeline and resize it there with letterboxing so it doesn’t suck and seems to work every time. Trying to do both through compressor might mess with your aspect ratio. And Episode is the way to go for final broadcast delivery.

Yeah, you’re doing too much for your screen on a laptop. You should be using a tower with 24 inch and larger screen, also get rid of other windows and just have viewer, timeline and canvas and have the viewer on the secondary monitor.

Have you trashed your prefs files? Your top sequence has all that stuff? Not in separate sequences? Try getting rid of audio render files as well as thumbnail and waveform cache files (unless you got rid of the actual audio file and are working with render only, but you wouldn’t do that:) You could also try to open an older version from the autosave vault, mebbie you have auto-save enabled? I never do and it has bitten me in the past.

If you export an non-self-contained movie, and drop it into compressor, is it still taking too long? Do you have your Qmaster settings optimal? I’ve noticed the increase of speed using compressor and not rendering from fcp. If you can, try both a self contained and not on a 1 min section and see if there is any difference. (I accidentally liked the previous post by mistake but he has a point, but I’m sure you don’t want to travel into another app just to apply masking to it.)
Try getting more ram if you can, I currently have 10 gigs and have not had an issue but am not doing what you’re doing.

As long as you’re not compressing there should really be no difference between fcp and qt.
Just curious: is the movie actually in a 2048 (2K) timeline? Then why not? (i know, time and size) But the theater should be scaling up the 1920 file anyway?
Tiffs huh? I actually prefer png files myself but I never have rendered image files out of fcp, only 3d packages, and this new qt sucks all over.

Have you set up compressor to it’s best? Are you running a dual core power mac G5? I had a dual 2.3? and it utilized almost all of my processing power each time. If you can, get an octo processor power mac and set it as your cluster. and always remember, it’s not always the computer’s fault, it still depends on the format (from and too), the drives (firewire, usb, internal) and of course size and length. I have had a gigantic leap in performance adjusting the settings in Qmaster or adding another machine to the cluster. Sometimes it’s just a finesse thing.Reality? What did you make it?
