  • Out Of Memory error

I know this has been an issue forever and I’ve read a lot of old posts. I have checked all the usual suspects (large stills, non-editing codec…) and this has none of them. Here’s the breakdown:

I have a feature that was captured at ProRes Proxy. The dailies have the film info in the top and bottom letter boxing and the producers are requesting weekly screenings. For the screenings, the AE has been using different methods to remove the film info. A masking plugin, two black mattes, cropping the top and bottom. All do basically the same thing but some have longer renders then others.

At first, the mask plug-in was used and was causing an Out Of Memory error every time. We decided it was because of the plug-in and went with the black slugs to create a new letterbox. This had no out of memory errors but the render took almost 5 hours. In an attempt to find a faster render, we looked into nesting the sequence and simply cropping the top and bottom. Again, we got the out of memory error. If you restart the system it will render without the out of memory.

    System Specs:

    Mac Pro (Harpertown)
    8G Ram
    Kona LHi
Media on 2x1Tb internal SATA drives stripped together
Renders going to 1 TB internal SATA drive

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you tried just cropping it on the timeline instead of nesting it?

Crop one clip, copy it, then highlight the remaining clips and paste attributes (crop)?

I’ve thought about that, but some shots have zooms and other things that will effect that way of cropping. Also, there are some composite shots that would need to be adjusted.

Are you working in Safe Rt?
Have you created a new admin test user?

Personally i think you are asking too much compositing of a editing tool.

If you export an non-self-contained movie, and drop it into compressor, is it still taking too long? Do you have your Qmaster settings optimal? I’ve noticed the increase of speed using compressor and not rendering from fcp. If you can, try both a self contained and not on a 1 min section and see if there is any difference. (I accidentally liked the previous post by mistake but he has a point, but I’m sure you don’t want to travel into another app just to apply masking to it.)
Try getting more ram if you can, I currently have 10 gigs and have not had an issue but am not doing what you’re doing.
    dual quad-core 2.26 xeon
    10 gig ram
    2- 1 tb internal
    -Beef

Reality? What did you make it?

Thanks for the suggestions. It is not a user account issue. I have tried as the old user (editor) as well as a new user and still have the same issue.

As for using different software, I don’t feel I am asking that much of the system. I nesting and cropping the top and bottom is too much, then maybe this isn’t a pro system after all. The render was held up at the first instance of text, coming on the second video layer, at the opening credits.

I don’t think it’s a RAM issue since FCP can only use 3G of ram no matter how much you have in your system. I’ve watched the RAM usage in Activity monitor as it starts a render and when it comes up with the error and there is more then enough.

As for the self contained file, I have created one, brought that in and cropped but then if you want to make any changes before the output, you have to start all over again. The editor likes to watch the film down with the mask on as a last check to make sure the film is how he wants it. Usually he has some minor tweaks before output. With a self contained file, those tweaks become major issues.
