    Hey Bob,

How do you setup the IO to use the Kona 3 to upconvert from analog to HD? I expect that the Format tab on the Control Panel you’d choose primary 525 29.97 and secondary 1080psf 23.98. Will the Kona 3 see the IO LA as an input? Can I digitize HD from my Beta SP deck this way?

    Thanks, Keith

September 5, 2006 at 7:38 am in reply to: Rendered Proxy?

Who can describe what this means? Rendered proxy, it’s the gray line that describes the rendered level of the clip below on the timeline. I’m unable to explain why I’m seeing this. My sequence settings are the same as my clips’ yet I’m still seeing this gray line indicating rendered proxy. Can’t anyone figure this out, it’s nowhere in the manuel or anywhere online. It appears no one has an explaination, I know that can’t be possible, someone has a simple explaination like maybe I’m missing something in my settings that’s right in front of me, or, it’s some secret.

August 11, 2006 at 4:24 pm in reply to: New system with new macs and latest raids question

Thanks, I’ll check them out, meanwhile untill the new machines are out are the latest quad express machines still using the ATI X800xt as the prefered video card, I’m not that happy with mine, I have a machine room and need to run an extension to my 30″ cinema display and it’s noisy in the blacks rather often, I have the expensive cable extension with the duel channel and still it seems that the X800 card just doesn’t have the umph to pump tthe length needed to get to my workstation.

    thanks again, Keith

Thanks, but I’m not interested in short form storage to reformat my drives, expecially putting all my data on a raid 0 xserve that you’re offering to rent, I’m just thinking about some slow cheap storage that’ll act as some sort of data backup system in case my raid’s directories fail, yesterday my secretary did a hard shut down on my system by mistake, thank god for disk warrior, I showed her how to turn it on and she thought that she should do me a favor and shut it down for me when she left for the day, she was just trying to help, simple misunderstanding but huge coronary for me. Now I’m thinking about directories and 8TB of data, I have raid 50 and so if a drive fails I’m covered but what about directories, Apple’s Disk utility locks up when I tried to boot it to repair the raid. Disk warrior said it had repaired the directory but that it was too damaged to replace. I have no idea what that meant but it’s up and running.

    Thanks, Keith

    Thanks,

the Ken Stone reference saved me from buying a server, thanks, simple and beautiful.

Now I have another question, I have about 7 or so Terabytes worth of project data on my 4 way xServe raids that I’d love to back up somehow. Is there any way to build some sort of raided tape backup that will backup over weekends etc. Is there such a beast? Is there a tape backup system taht large that is the cost of my car? I can recored the show onto an SR deck but I have many other rendered files I’d like to protect, I’m running raid 50 but still, if my directory were to fail I’d be out of luck.

    Thanks,

[walter biscardi] “I was able to correct this in about 2 minutes”

Do you use a control panel like the JL Cooper MCS Spectrum with the Final Touch?

Do you know of a probe on the market that I can buy to properly set up my 20L5 monitor to color correct?

    Thanks, Keith Collea

March 13, 2006 at 11:57 pm in reply to: What exactly is 32-bit??

Pierre, I have a special question probably not suited for this forum but in keeping with this thread, sort of..

I have captured my files using Final Cut in QT 422 10bit uncompressed, I’m working with a visual effects company that’s not used to working in any kind of video workflow especially QT. Their people don’t want to even learn about it, I’m getting a deal so I won’t press this issue with them, They are wanting DXP log files and are willing to accept any other type of image based file format that is at least floating point linear or similar. Since my YUV needs to be converted to RGB etc and I see in this thread that Final Cut may not be the best choice I’m wondering if Shake which I have but have never used would do a better job of converting my work to a promoted space. I’d stay in an RGB space for the rest of the workflow on out to film, in other words I’d get back from the effects house the same kind of file I’d be giving them and then would output 10bit RGB QT from shake back to Final Cut to XML to Color Correction on Final Touch then out to a file format used by the film printers.

My question is how do I get Shake to convert my 10bit YUV files into some kind of RGB file format without any compromises?

    Thanks, Keith

March 1, 2006 at 4:21 am in reply to: Raid 3 or not raid 3, that is the question???

I know, and if you ask any of them why raid 5 and not raid 3, or 50 and not 30 they’ll simply say, “that’s what Apple recommends.” I was simply hoping there was another opinion based on experience. The other companies you mentioned all recommend raid 30. I’ll go raid 50, I hate to be on the edge, more than I already am.

Also, in the disk utility there’s an option button under the raid striping tab that if selected gives the option for raid block size, it’s default is 32k, The folks at Aja said to use the default setting, I read the Apple help file associated with that option and it suggests that the block size should be larger for somethings like video files, who knows??

    Thanks, Keith

June 25, 2005 at 5:24 pm in reply to: downconverting to make DVD

I have a HDcam 23.98 to Kona DVC Pro HD 1080 Final Cut Studio project that I would like to downconvert and out put to the component outputs into my Sony DVD recorder which acepts Y, Pb, Pr inputs. I can’t seem to be able to figure out the settings necessary to play off the timeline into the recorder. There’s downconversion, 3:2 pulldown, anamorphic, 29.97, down resolution, all tried with no success, HD 23.98 to component output 29.97 525. Any help would be most appreciated, thanks, Keith Collea
