Expanding HD edit system need advice
Posted by Keicol on August 6, 2006 at 8:46 amI have two 5.6TB xServe Raids and one G5 desktop with two PCI-x Fiber cards (4 channels) running all my raids together for uncompressed HD. It works well, very fast. Now I want to add another G5 workstation. What will I need? An xServe loaded with two PCI-X fiber cards, a 16 hole fiber distribution box and another G5 desktop with two PCI-x fiber cards?
Is there a diagram somewhere of this setup?
Thanks,
Keith

Just FYI, If you’re adding a Quad or newer, that is PCIe technology on your G5 so you’ll need to purchase PCIe cards.

August 6, 2006 at 2:41 pmYou are going to need a San system, unless Steve releases ISan next week!
Go to the Apple Xsan page and have a good read. https://www.apple.com/xsan/
Also look at Metasan which is another file based system. https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/metasan_nattress.html
SanMP is a volume based system and althogh being cheap, I wouldn’t recommend it as it locks ‘volumes’ when you mount them
Hang around on the CC Xsan page

August 9, 2006 at 5:39 amThanks,
the Ken Stone reference saved me from buying a server, thanks, simple and beautiful.
Now I have another question, I have about 7 or so Terabytes worth of project data on my 4 way xServe raids that I’d love to back up somehow. Is there any way to build some sort of raided tape backup that will backup over weekends etc. Is there such a beast? Is there a tape backup system taht large that is the cost of my car? I can recored the show onto an SR deck but I have many other rendered files I’d like to protect, I’m running raid 50 but still, if my directory were to fail I’d be out of luck.
Thanks,

We rent out a 7.0 Tb Xserve RAID which you could use as a temp storehouse for your files while you reformat your system.

August 10, 2006 at 12:21 amThanks, but I’m not interested in short form storage to reformat my drives, expecially putting all my data on a raid 0 xserve that you’re offering to rent, I’m just thinking about some slow cheap storage that’ll act as some sort of data backup system in case my raid’s directories fail, yesterday my secretary did a hard shut down on my system by mistake, thank god for disk warrior, I showed her how to turn it on and she thought that she should do me a favor and shut it down for me when she left for the day, she was just trying to help, simple misunderstanding but huge coronary for me. Now I’m thinking about directories and 8TB of data, I have raid 50 and so if a drive fails I’m covered but what about directories, Apple’s Disk utility locks up when I tried to boot it to repair the raid. Disk warrior said it had repaired the directory but that it was too damaged to replace. I have no idea what that meant but it’s up and running.
Thanks, Keith
