  • New system with new macs and latest raids question

Posted by Keicol on August 10, 2006 at 11:36 pm

I’m using the latest gear from last year, 2.7 duel G5 with 2G ram, FCP, Shake, AE, PS, ATI X800 video card, Cinema displays, Kona 2, two PCI X fiber cards, two 5.6TB Xserve raids running as 1 raid 50 and am doing uncompressed 444 RGB 1080 24p work.

I need to build another system in a third world country where bribes are necessary to get gear in and out or pay expensive taxes and thus will need reliable gear that won’t have to shipped in and out of country for repair. What’s the lastest equipment for this generation of intel Macs? The Atto 4 channel fiber card? Is there a single raid box that will capture 444 UC RGB 1080 24p and be large enough for feature length work?

Has anyone tested the new intel macs with the Kona.. is it the kona 3 now?

And I understand that there’s lots of new storage besides the 4 way duel Xserve model that I’m currently using. Is there one raid that stands out above the rest, I’ll need a bit of room on the drives as I’ll need to run raid 50 or 30 for safety etc.

    Thanks for your time,

    Keith keicol

[keicol] “The Atto 4 channel fiber card? I”

ATTO FC-43ES is the fibre card.

I’ll let you know next week. We should be receiving our Mac Pro 3.0 machine along with a new Ciprico Fibre Channel arry for testing with our Kona 3.

Thanks, I’ll check them out, meanwhile untill the new machines are out are the latest quad express machines still using the ATI X800xt as the prefered video card, I’m not that happy with mine, I have a machine room and need to run an extension to my 30″ cinema display and it’s noisy in the blacks rather often, I have the expensive cable extension with the duel channel and still it seems that the X800 card just doesn’t have the umph to pump tthe length needed to get to my workstation.

    thanks again, Keith

Not sure if any card will work well with an extension cable with a 30″. Cost of the cable doesn’t mean anything, those 30″ monitors are pulling a very high resolution. I don’t have any issues driving a 23 and 20″ monitor using the stock card in the G5 Quad with extension cables, but they’re running at a much lower resolution than the 30.
