While the media pool can hold about 30 images, there are only two actual media players. You can only have any two slots from the media pool loaded at any given time.

  • What software are you trying to use with the capture? Media Express or something else?

Have you tried it on another monitor? Was it always blurry? Have you tried different cables?

  • Well, by your specs, the Tricaster 8000 is out. I don’t think any of the Tricasters have more than 8 external inputs. All the rest are internal graphics / playback.

The ATEM series are decently solid switchers. They have their ‘personality’ for sure, like our 1 M/E doesn’t like being really warm, but a couple of fans on the heatsink fixes that.

The BMDs don’t do video playback. They have two frame buffers that can hold enough of a TGA sequence to use as a transition stinger, and around 30 still overlays, alpha or solid. We have a 1 M/E paired with a CasparCG system for graphics, and an Edius playout computer for video. Eventually we are looking to move to something like a NewTek 3Play for playback.

I can’t speak for the Granite (which is a BroadcastPix box, btw), but it seems to be comparable to the Tricaster in terms of functions, and is capable of the inputs you want (Granite+ has 22 SDI inputs), but just realize the difference in price. The ATEM 2M/E with panel runs around $20k. From what I can tell the Tricaster and Granite are quite a bit beyond that, due to their extra features. You’ll save money with the ATEM but you need to build the systems around it for anything beyond just switching.

  • The switcher wont’ make your video ‘choppy’. If it plays back smooth out of the computer then it will play back smooth through the ATEM. However if your computer doing the actual playback isn’t hefty enough to play back your videos smoothly, you’ll get chop.

Basically, smooth video playback isn’t an issue with the ATEM, it’s an issue with your source.

ATEM switchers do not have built-in video playback. They have two ‘clip players’ which can play up to 360 total frames, and are mostly meant to use as stingers and/or ‘Bugs’.

The ATEM should only have a few frames of delay, but it also depends on what formats you are coming from and going to. Doing Up / Down conversion results in a fairly sizable delay, and for best results you should set your equipment to work in the native resolution of whatever your output device (projector, monitors, etc) is set to.

  • The GPI/Tally interface only supports program tally, AFAIK. You may be able to build something custom via the SDK, however.

The TVS is the only one with an AES/EBU input. The 1M/E only has analog audio inputs. One stereo and one LTC. Same for the outputs.

The 1M/E, however, will accept two channels of embedded audio per input, and all of the SDI / HDMI outputs include that embedded audio.

Unless you go up to RAID arrays, you’re limited to the speed of your disk, and that looks about right. External SATA with a PCIe RAID card would be your best bet, I think.

The 1 m/e is a single DVE, so you could only do one real ‘PIP’ at any given time. There are four upstream keyers, so you could have four PIP placements setup and ready to use at any time. If you wanted a fifth, you’d have to enter in all the values each time you wanted to change it. If you use the same positions for the PIP, it’s fairly easy to change which input is in the window.
