  • Is it possible to get this to work?

Posted by Johan Windh on January 15, 2013 at 2:53 pm

    Hi there,

I currently work on the following system:

    CPU 2 x 2,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

    RAM 8 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM

GPU ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB

    OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)

    Decklink Studio Video Card

However the testresult are the following:

Is it not possible to get better performance out of this situation?

I do get constant frame dropouts when playing material in FCP (7) in 1080p.

Is the GPU of great importance when it comes to performance in FCP?

    Kind regards,

    Johan

This app is only testing your disk speed. Want faster performance, get faster drives.

Unless you go up to RAID arrays, you’re limited to the speed of your disk, and that looks about right. External SATA with a PCIe RAID card would be your best bet, I think.

If you want solutions for drive speeds…it might help to tell us what your drive setup is. If internal…stripe a couple/3 of them together and your numbers will increase.

If esata, than the esata card will have a big influence…cheaper card…cheaper performance.

Lots of possibilities…just takes time, money, and testing

    Thanx for the response guys.

    The drives are:

    320 GB SATA (ST3320820AS_P)

    1 TB SATA (system) (WD1002FAEX-00Z3A0)

    2TB (WD2002FAEX-007BA0)

    2 TB SATA (Hitachi HUA722020ALA330)

Oh btw, is this the cause to the constant frame-dropouts during playback in FCP?

    Kind Regards,

    Johan

I’m going with a bump here, regarding my last post.

I’m REALLY appreciative of any help.

    Kind Regards,

So it looks like you basically have two seperate 2tb drives for your main storage…both internal?

As i said earlier, stripe those toghether and your speed will increase, or start heading down the road of a Raid confing, with a proper Esata card, SAS card, or something along those lines. Individual drives are not really geared towards media recording and playback. As Juan said, those speeds look about right. I’ll bet your speed doubles if you stripe the drives together. Get rid of the 320, add another 2tb and create a 3 drive stipe, and i’ll bet it goes off the chart. Ofcourse in that scenario you have absolutely no
file protection. A decent Raid 5 config will net you closer to 200 mbs, an expensive Raid card even more.

Thanx Glenn. I’ll have a look at those setups.

Do you think that this will make the framedrops stop? (Is the disk-issue the cause of the dropped frames?)

    Kind Regards,

    Johan
