Not sure what card he is using, but i’m sure it is a high-end one. He didn’t really say why he didn’t think it would work, but at $225 an hour, my cynical side is saying that he wanted me to rent more time there! : ) This is one of the very few post houses (and it is a “real” post house, they do commercials, etc.) with an HDCam deck, so i figure the guy knows what he’s talking about (or at least has very strong opinions!), but it sure sounds like he’s wrong…in my humble opinion so far…

by “texted and textless” do you mean you render two versions, one with graphic overlays and one without? also, would you leave it in DVCPro HD codec or go ProRes?

interesting…because as i’ve done some internet searching this morning, i’m seeing reports of “banding” with the 2407 that seem to persist even after the 1 minute warmup time. is anyone else seeing “banding”?

who are your favorite online houses to buy from? i’ve bought very few computer peripherals online preferring instead to go with a brick and mortar house where i can easily return stuff if there is a problem…

ya, i just did my first shoot on XDCam this week and thought about trying the super dinky proxies for an “offline”, but like we all see, the full-size XDCam files are already dinky and are handled quite well in FCP 6.0.1.

my only problem so far with the XDCam stuff is that when i open XDCam Transfer (from File/Import), it takes quite awhile for all the proxy thumbnails to show up in the window (150-200 clips per disc), and then when i highlight/select them all to import, i repeatedly get several clips skipped that do not transfer over to my hard drive, and thus into FCP. the manual states that “only one file at a time may be copied to or from the disc,” so are they serious in that i would have to sit here and select one, import it, select the next one, import it, etc.????

at this point my workaround is to just try to figure out which ones did not import and go grab them individually, but i’m guessing i’m missing something here (as usual). also, most of the clips import with the clip naming convention i gave them on the camcorder (sequentially numbered after “filename”), and yet some have the generic clip name that starts over at “0” on each disc (which thus yields files on different discs having the same name as files on other discs….

just got my first answer from Seagate last night. here it is, maybe it will enlighten others as well. (this was news to me):

“I apologize for the lateness of reply. Unfortunately on a MAC there is no way to adjust the sleep setting for this drive with any software that we provide. Nor is there any adjustment to turn off the drive when then computer turns off either. I believe we are working on software to fix this on Free Agent external drives but there is no exact ETA on when this may be available yet.”

eureka! amazing what can happen when i simply slow down and READ the manuals that came with XDCam Transfer software package!

i know you’ve all been waiting on pins and needles, but just letting you know that i reinstalled everything again today, from OS X on up, and it worked flawlessly. all discs were read fine UNTIL i put in the first FCS 2 disc (just like yesterday). i popped it in about 10 times. no dice. so i swapped out DVD drives (went back to my original apple drive that came with the G5) and ‘voila!’, all FCS 2 discs were read and installed without a hitch. so it appears it was my newer (dual-layer capable) LaCie burner that was the culprit. anyway, i’m editing away in FCP 6, with 1080i clips playing without the shift field problems.

of course, my fingers are still crossed, assuming SOMETHING is going to blow up soon…
