  • external Seagate 500GB SATA drive questions…

i’ve also sent this to Seagate tech support, but as yet have not heard back and wondered if any of you have experienced this and maybe others can benefit from the answer as well…

i just got an external 500 GB SATA drive and it doesn’t turn off when i power down the computer, but my external 500 LaCie drive does. not sure how to change that setting.

also, when editing in FCP and i am away from the computer for a few minutes, it’s like the Seagate drive “sleeps” in that when i click on the timeline again, it takes several seconds for a response, and i hear the drive speed up as if it has been sleeping. my LaCie drive doesn’t do that either and just curious if i can change a setting somewhere. thanks!

just got my first answer from Seagate last night. here it is, maybe it will enlighten others as well. (this was news to me):

“I apologize for the lateness of reply. Unfortunately on a MAC there is no way to adjust the sleep setting for this drive with any software that we provide. Nor is there any adjustment to turn off the drive when then computer turns off either. I believe we are working on software to fix this on Free Agent external drives but there is no exact ETA on when this may be available yet.”

    thanks again!
