This has been happening to me more and more frequently over the past week. Working mostly with HDV files that have been converted to Pro Res (non HQ) on a Pro Res timeline. Just a little scrolling seems to set it off, but only every hour or so (gee…that’s all!) : ) I’ve trashed prefs, dumped thumbnail, waveform and render folders to no avail.

FCS 3 supposed to be showing up in the mail soon, and I have Snow Leopard ready to install when it gets here. Hopefully all the new software and OS will clear it up???

    Thanks again!

  • I’m still looking for this info, too. I’ve gone to a few mac forum, asked the question about where to get composer and publisher info, searched on my own computer under “license”, “agreement”, etc. and am still coming up empty. Any ideas out there?

    Thanks again!

My painstaking workaround is this: select all the clips from a single folder/reel, keep “Reconnect all files in relative path” UNchecked, it will find the first clip in the list, i click “open”, then “locate” the next clip, scroll to it, “open”, and so on to the end of the list then “connect”…and they are all there.

    Thanks again!

I did the conversion of all clips to ProRes (overnight, and then some), put them in folders of the same name as the originals, though all in a main folder labeled “HDV conv to ProRes”. I open my timeline and attempt to reconnect all the clips to the media*, and it constantly only reconnects the first clip in the list…even though “Reconnect all files in relative path” is checked…

    Hmmm…

*NOTE: I already had a rough cut going with the original HDV clips on a timeline. I copied all clips in the timeline and pasted them into a new ProRes timeline, hoping to reconnect the clips to the newly converted puppies (starting to sound like church for dogs, eh?), but just getting the fist clip in the list to actually reconnect)

    Thanks again!

  • Hey Thanks!

The first two steps were easy enough, but not sure how to “Switch back and add the selection as a layer mask (may need to invert it)”. Like I said, i’m a newbie…

  • Thanks Richard, that was a very good video, and i’m sure it will help me down the road. But for this project, it didn’t answer my question. To be more clear, the targa image that i’m starting with is a lower third graphic (basically just a bar with two sections: one is opaque, and the other about 50% transparent. If I resave it as a targa or tiff (both fairly large files), the black in the alpha channel is transparent when i bring it into FCP. But everytime I try saving it as a PSD, the black BG is opaque. I realize I could cut the black out of the BG in PS, but doing it that way the bar that is supposed to be 50% transparent ends up being fully opaque. : (

  • Ha, but thanks for the tip . . . no, it wasn’t checked, but now that it is, it plays no differently (though i closed and re-opened the app).

I got a hold of Sony tech support this afternoon and the guy was extremely helpful. First of all, he said ClipWrap has not yet quite caught up to the NX5 software/codec…with the main problem being when things are recorded with LPCM audio. Basically, LPCM totally messes up ClipWrap, and thus my out of sync stuff, and LPCM limits the clip size to 2GB, which at my settings equals exactly 11:54…thus the mysterious new clips.

Using FCP Log and Transfer fixes all these problems. The extra clip made due to the LPCM will automatically link back together if captured with Log and Transfer, though it really is TERRIBLY slow.

In short, DON’T use LPCM audio on this camera if going into FCP!!!! Use Dolby instead. The Sony guy said this should capture about 5-10X faster than if the LPCM is used. So, my shoot tomorrow will be nothing but Dolby, baby!

Meanwhile, I’ll probably spend the next few days capturing today’s footage with FCP…but at least i learned something and hopefully this will help someone avoid my mistake today.

The best news: what i thought was turning into ruined footage today is not ruined at all…just capturing very slow. I’ve tested the playback in FCP and everything is looking good. All synced, and no more mysterious extra clip after 11:54! : )

    Thanks again!

Hmmmm….so far, both clips preceding the short “auto-cut” clip were 11:54…so maybe i hit some sort of clip-length limit on the card? Either way, the clip following has no audio and is jittery…

    Thanks again!
