NX5 and FCP
Ouch, it looks like i should’ve come here before renting this puppy (Sony NX5U). The rental house gave me the camera and said there’s a manual in there…so i go home, grab a few test shots…read the manual and see it only talking about WINDOWS! Holy Moley…so to CreativeCow i went, and see the challenge.
So, i saw a tidbit on Shane’s “CLIPWRAP”, will search for it and see if i can use it, but is there any sort of “decent” workflow to get this footage into FCP? I’ve never use Log and Transfer, but it’s looking like that’s where everyone is pointing…but with the camera hooked up via the USB, i see nothing anywhere on my computer that indicates the computer sees anything on the 128 GB flash drive. Any basic pointers would be helpful. Thanks!

Wow…just posting here makes my brain work better! I took the Flash Unit off…and there was a USB port on it that is hidden until you take it off! Guess what? The clips now show up in Log & Transfer! Amazing…

You’re welcome. Thanks for searching. The only issues I had was with shots over 15-20 min. Then the import took FOREVER. Shots under that, no problem. But ClipWrap is very error free.

Thanks for the pointers, Shane. I’m trying out ClipWrap. Do you use “Rewrap (don’t alter…)”, or convert right to 422 or 422 HQ, and then import directly into FCP without using Log and Capture? I’ve done all three conversion types, and of course, the file sizes are quite different, but just seeing what is the best most efficient way to go.
Then for archiving the stuff from the Flash drive, do you ONLY backup (i’m going to Blu-Ray discs these days) the ClipWrap converted media, or do you also backup the original MTS files, and/or ALL the info from the Flash drive?

backup everything.
sometimes when I’m in a crunch I’ll just do a capture
now over the SDI port. Need to get clipwrap. -
I backup the camera originals, not the imported media.

In the midst of converting, and I’ve checked the files that are done. ALL audio/video sync is off by almost 2 seconds, and the worst part is that there are some places where “it” (the camera?) made it’s own cut while i was shooting – in what should’ve been an unbroken 10 minute speech! – and the clip that follows has NO SOUND at all, and the video is kind of “jittery”. but then, the next clip appears to be fine, though this “auto-cutting” resulting in no audio has – so far – happened several times. What now? Have any of you NX5 users encountered this? Maybe it’s a ClipWrap problem? Is Sony responsive to any of this??

Hmmmm….so far, both clips preceding the short “auto-cut” clip were 11:54…so maybe i hit some sort of clip-length limit on the card? Either way, the clip following has no audio and is jittery…

I got a hold of Sony tech support this afternoon and the guy was extremely helpful. First of all, he said ClipWrap has not yet quite caught up to the NX5 software/codec…with the main problem being when things are recorded with LPCM audio. Basically, LPCM totally messes up ClipWrap, and thus my out of sync stuff, and LPCM limits the clip size to 2GB, which at my settings equals exactly 11:54…thus the mysterious new clips.
Using FCP Log and Transfer fixes all these problems. The extra clip made due to the LPCM will automatically link back together if captured with Log and Transfer, though it really is TERRIBLY slow.
In short, DON’T use LPCM audio on this camera if going into FCP!!!! Use Dolby instead. The Sony guy said this should capture about 5-10X faster than if the LPCM is used. So, my shoot tomorrow will be nothing but Dolby, baby!
Meanwhile, I’ll probably spend the next few days capturing today’s footage with FCP…but at least i learned something and hopefully this will help someone avoid my mistake today.
The best news: what i thought was turning into ruined footage today is not ruined at all…just capturing very slow. I’ve tested the playback in FCP and everything is looking good. All synced, and no more mysterious extra clip after 11:54! : )

This is what happens when companies come out with new cameras…support for them takes a bit to catch up. L&T worked for me on short clips, but over 15 min and they took HOURS to import. I used ClipWrap and things were better. But we didn’t shoot with that audio setting.
