should i reinstall FCS 2 on top of itself?
Posted by J. Tad newberry on July 19, 2007 at 1:45 amperhaps some of you read my plethora of posts in the last 24 hours regarding my upgrading woes. in a nutshell, 2 of the install discs for FCS 2 were not seen by the computer when i inserted them as asked for by Installer. eventually, all discs were read, but just not in the order asked for, and the install process never got to the “finish” stage.
for the most part, FCS is working well, though i’ve seen Motion slow down while i work with it…additionally, i just installed an additional 2 GB of (Kingston) RAM yesterday – bringing me to a total of 4 GB – but Motion still chugs along, not every smooth playback at all.
i’m wondering if i should just reinstall all of FCS 2 and hope all discs are read as needed this time??
thanks again!

July 19, 2007 at 1:54 pmYour problem is your graphics card… needs to be beefier.

Slow graphics card. Install the ATI 1900

July 19, 2007 at 2:57 pmthanks guys, i’ll get one…
that will obviously speed up my Motion playback, but what are your thoughts about my last FCS 2 upgrade install attempt? that is, the graphics card wouldn’t have anything to do with the computer not reading 2 of the install discs, would it?
thanks again!

No clue on the install errors. We didn’t see that here, sounds like a corruption in the OS. Have you called AppleCare about this?

July 19, 2007 at 3:13 pmMort… if you didn’t do a clean install of the OS before you installed the studio, you need to do that. i.e. backup everything on your startup disk, then perform an erase and install of the OS, update it, then install studio over that and update it.

July 19, 2007 at 3:13 pmApplecare?? (thanks for reminding me…i always forget about that resource).
i’ve done a little checking on the graphics cards, and at the MacPro site there is a comparison of the GeForce 7300 GT and the ATI Radeon X1900 XT. The GeForce occupies “one standard slot”, while the ATI takes a “double-wide” slot.
another dumb question (i should probably go back over to the calf), but how do i know which slot i have in my G5 dual 2 GHz?
also, the ATI appears to be around $300-400, what are your thoughts on less expensive cards?
(i’ll call Applecare as well…thanks for the tip)
thanks again!

A double wide means it will take up the space of 2 slots, not that it requires a special slot. The Mac Pro was built with this in mind and allows for a double wide graphics card without blocking off a slot. If you have a G5 you will lose the use of one slot if you put this card in.
If you have a G5 Dual 2.0 then you will require a PCI-X card. Not the PCIe card.

July 19, 2007 at 3:25 pmthanks Jerry, but i did do all that. used Carbon Copy to clone my system drive to an external SATA drive, then did an erase and install of the OS. the OS installation went without a hitch, but two of my FCS 2 discs weren’t being read by the computer. the Installer requester would ask for the next disc, i put it in, wait…wait………wait….nothing…so i would put in the next disc and it read fine. “finished” the install, went back to the disc that wasn’t being read, and it finally read…but the installer requester screen was still “frozen”, asking for the same disc. never got to the “finish” section of the installation…
thanks again!

We honestly did not do this on any of our FCP / Kona systems. I am waiting for Leopard to come out and then we will do this all at once. I’ve never found an issue installing Studio on top of an old version.
Certainly going from OS to OS we do clean installs all around, but for updating the Studio package, we didn’t find that necessary.
A good idea for sure to do the clean install if you have the time, but in our case we didn’t have the time available.
