AVCHD will play, though it may be sluggish. So to play this type of file you would select a ProRes (or uncompressed) Blackmagic Easy Setup that matches the file format of the AVCHD file.

Again, it may be sluggish, but it should play. You can always try to capture the AVCHD footage into ProRes to see if that will help, or if appropriate use the log and transfer function to transcode the files to ProRes on ingest.

The only setting you should need to worry about is to make sure that you have the proper easy setup selected. Start a new project and make sure you are using the Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 50 (codec) project setting. This should set the project up correctly.

Then try re-importing your footage and see if it looks right then.

Is the source HDCP encrypted? If it is then our boards will not capture from it. This could explain the flickering. Do you have another HDMI source to try?

Well, on the Mac for 8bit uncompressed we use the native QT codecs. So as long as you have QTPro or FCP installed they will be able to play it without issue.

If they do not, then they would simply need to install the Decklink Drivers on the machine (don’t worry the drivers won’t do anything without the board) and that will install the codecs for them to use.

June 30, 2009 at 8:54 pm in reply to: What is the maximum length for HDMI cables?

Please keep in mind that HDMI cable do not work like analog cables. The signal does not degrade over time. When the cable gets to long (or is of low quality) the signal will be there and perfect one foot, and the next it will be gone.

So if you get signal out of the other end…it should be full quality.

Of course….SDI works great for this, and you can always consider converters at the end. A 100′ cable is major spendy. So the functional question, is are the converters and SDI cheaper? Maybe. Definately less problematic, and if you get a broken end on an SDI cable you can always put a new connector on. Your money is in the point devices not the cable.

    Food for thought.

    Hello there,

The issue here is likely due to the encode process. Depending on the parameters of the encode will define how much CPU/Ram overhead will be needed to do that encode in real time.

I am not surprised you are seeing the same issue on the Dazzle as our board. It’s doing the same thing, looking at a generic input and doing some encoding.

To fix this, you might need to up your ram, but more likely you will need more powerful CPUs to do this encode in real time.

The fact that the encode seems to happen fine for the first 7 to 8 minutes and then falls apart might even suggest some sort of memory leak. Try keeping your minimum bitrate and maximum bitrate a bit closer together and see if that helps the encode to be less erratic.

    Bummer, apologize for that.

Yeah, we are actively working on it (we are in contact with the chip makers), and I know some headway is being made, but when we do finally get it fixed it will need to go through testing. So the unfortunate answer is that I don’t know exactly when it will be fixed. Not with enough certainty to bank on telling you to “wait for it”.

So…if you need that system urgently, as much as I hate to say it, you should probably consider a different motherboard/proc, or possibly one of our 4x lane boards.

  • Whatever your preference is should be fine. Though I would stick to DVI for practical reasons. I.E., the connector screws in.

  • Yes, it is possible to downgrade. Simply uninstall the 7.2 drivers and reinstall the 7.1.2. When you reboot the system should come up and flash the firmware back.

    Hey there,

Obviously all motherboards are a little different and may behave differently, but so far we’ve had great results with the i7 motherboards and our 4x lane boards (Decklink HD Extreme 3 included). To be accurate there is an issue with our 1x lane boards and the x58 chipset that we are working hard to resolve, but for the board you mentioned you should be fine.

As for what type of drive setup you will need, it will depend on what you are doing. If you are using HD Uncompressed, you will need to start with at least 4 drives in a RAID 0 (you can consider redundant arrays too). If you are using compressed, you can probably get away with 1 drive, but you will likely not be happy, so I would suggest at least a 2 drive array for compressed as well, and this should be separate from your system drive.

If you don’t have experience with setting up arrays or video editing systems we would always recommend you have an experienced integrator do it (there are many around), but it is something the adventurous DIYer could tackle with some research.
