  • Shouldn’t you be asking on a droid board? Sheesh.

Just kidding. I would film the subject to be “projected” on a green screen, then use chroma key to make their background transparent, use pan/crop to make them smaller & place them wherever I wanted in the main scene, and either lower the opacity of the projected image to make it seem somewhat transparent, or try using the TV simulator plug-in or something like that, to make the projected image look grainy.

  • I’ve used just about every version of Cool Edit, Pro & otherwise, until it turned into Audition. I also use Sound Forge. I’ve got them both on my Vegas computer, and use both a lot. I find Cool Edit to be much better for extremely detailed editing of the waveform, such as removing breaths, etc.. However, that is probably more personal preference than something lacking in Sound Forge. I rarely use Cool Edit’s multitrack function anymore, since I started using Vegas.

I do love Soundforge for some things, though, like EQ and other filters. Last night I used it’s paragraphic EQ to remove an occasional low end rumble during an interview that I couldn’t seem to isolate with Cool Edit’s EQ.

Cool Edit’s (and Audition’s) noise reduction works a lot better for me, too. Sound Forge claims to have NR, and I’ve messed with it on several occasions, but I can’t figure it out. Which is strange, because usually when I’m using software that I can’t figure out even after many attempts, it comes from Adobe!

Is there a way I can record 4 seperate audio tracks with 4 seperate mics, all at the same time

Yes, but not with a typical sound card. My brother uses Vegas in his recording studio, and uses a MOTU device called either the 824 of the 248. Anyway, it interfaces with the computer via Firewire, and provides 8 inputs & 8 ouputs, allowing you to record up to 8 channels at a time. My father in law also uses Vegas for audio, and I’ve seen him record a concert, with an entire screen full of audio tracks recording at once, using a higher end MOTU unit than my brother’s.

A firewire card will cost you about $50, and plugs into an empty PCI slot in your computer. It’s very easy to install.

Is there a way to save all of the drum tracks as a whole for, say, split events and fading while still being able to tweak each drum individualy. Would you have to do the tweaking first then save it all as a group.

When you say “save it all as a group”, are you talking about rendering all of the tracks to a single audio file, or are you talking about “g”rouping the drums tracks by selecting them all and hitting “G” to group them? I would “G”roup them, rather than render to a single audio file. That way they’ll all move as a group, but you’ll still have individual control over all of the individual tracks.

To punch in, there are probably multiple techniques. When I’ve helped engineer recordings in which punch-ins were done, we simply muted the one part we intended to replace, and also create a loop area exactly the same duration as the track to be replaced. Then we enabled recording on an empty track, recorded the “punch in” in precisely the right place, and then removed the muted segment, and replaced it with the new recording. It is harder to explain than to actually do.

I recently bought a $1000 HP laptop off the shelf at an office store. I just wanted to be able to check email while on the road, and maybe edit some audio. I installed Vegas 6.0 just to see how horrible it would be, and… it is awesome. The laptop has become my main editing machine, and I only use my desktop for rendering.

My brother uses Vegas in his recording studio, and uses a piece of equipment made by Mark Of The Unicorn, often refered to as “Motu”. I think his is a model 824. It has 8 audio inputs & outputs, interfaces with the computer via firewire, and he can assign each input to its own track in Vegas. It works great.

I did something like that once. I started with a map of the US. I opened it in Photoshop and added a red line showing the progress of a trip from one side to the other. So I ended up with one unchanged US map jpg, and an almost identical jpg with a red line on the map. I put them both on the timeline in Vegas, and made them overlap. Then I added a Linear Wipe transition, which made it seem like the line was traveling across the map.

I think used the Linear Wipe called “Left-Right, Soft Edge”.

if I unlock the lock aspect ratio I should be able to adjust to fit the 16:9 frame I want

You need to unlock “Lock aspect ratio”, and also turn off “Maintain aspect ratio” under “Source”.

Let me know how it works out.

I’ve never dealt with this, but have you tried using the Event Pan/Crop window? That is where I’d start, if you haven’t already. Try the presets, and if those don’t work, turn “Maintain Aspect Ratio” off, and unlock the “Lock Aspect Ratio Hold” option on the left side of the Pan/Crop screen. In doing so, you can stretch or squash the image however you want, which might allow you to make it look the way it should.

July 4, 2006 at 5:53 pm in reply to: I’m Puzzled by Transition Presets

When I apply a preset, and then re-open transition properties, I still see “(Untitled)” in the preset drop-down box. Shouldn’t it remember the preset name I’ve selected before? TIA.

Is it also forgetting the settings of the preset you used, or it only “forgetting” the name of the preset? I don’t know anything about Pixelan Spicemaster, but my experience with transitions & effects is the same as yours: You apply a preset, and then when you go back to the transition or effect properties, it says “untitled”, as if you never applied a preset. However, all of the settings of the preset remain intact. It is annoying, and I’ve always wondered if it was a bug, but the behavior remains the same through each version of Vegas I’ve used, so maybe it’s the way Sony wants it.

If you’re not only “losing” the name of the preset that you used, but also all of the settings of that preset, then I’d say there is definitely a problem.
