I’m not sure of an answer, but I do know this:
DO NOT REFORMAT YOUR MEDIA DRIVES!!!
Maybe some wise sage will come up with an answer, but I personally do not believe you need to go to the extreme of reformatting your drives. My guess is there is a very simple answer to get your drives to show up. Unless you are under a severe time crunch, don’t do it. Resist your tech’s advice and work the OS issue. Have you reinstalled the Avid software yet? What about the drive utilities? Are you on the correct service pack for your MCA version?

Can you plug any SCSI device and start your G5? I suspect you won’t be able to use those drives – I ran into the same issue when I moved to OSX on a G4. Essentially, all my SCSI device stopped working.

Check your audio project settings, then the sample rate of the material. You might have mismatched sample rates…

The DSR-500 is not supported. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t work – it just means Avid hasn’t tested it. My bet is on a menu setting in the camera. If it’s going down the pipe, Avid will see it (or should).
BTW, is the TC just not there? Or does it not match up with what’s on the tape? (Thinking out loud here) Maybe the TC signal doesn’t get sent down the FW pipe when it’s recording to a tape…. Just a thought.

The firewire will capture whatever is sent down the ‘pipe’. It works on a deck – are you sure the camera is actually sending the TC signal via firewire? Maybe a camera setting?
Of course, the TC button needs to be enabled in the capture tool…

Have you tried turning off DNA, installing and powering up the DSR-11, then turning on the DNA? I’m assuming you’ve set up the deck properly in the deck configuration menu within Avid?

The Rosetta Stone (and others like it) translates an RS-422 signal to a serial signal and vice versa – your RS-422 deck can be controlled by the Avid via the serial port. The JVC deck mentioned earlier works with the Avid via firewire, but is problematic in my experience.

Are you dissolves rendered? Yellow or blue dots mean they are not. One of the new features at some point was the ability to add a dissolve without rendering. I don’t remember if it started on ver. 7, but if you don’t pay attention, you’ll breeze through adding dissolve and find the little button in the dialog box is set to ‘add’, instead of ‘and and render’…
