I believe what you are seeing is the underscan of NTSC video. It’s not DVCPro, it’s all NTSC SD formats. Cropping the file in Sorenson is a good way to get rid of it. BTW, capturing firewire video at 1:1 is overkill. Bringing it in at DV25 via firewire is essentially bringing it in 1 for 1. It’s all ones and zeros. Once you get your SDI cards, definitely use 1:1.

I’d say first problem may be your CPU. I’d also try hooking your Mojo back up. It’s not just a way of getting video into your system. It’s like a turbo charger on a car. It really ups the performance.

Your best bet is to export as QT reference, then encode in Sorenson. You may want to do a video mixdown first to facilitate the encode process.

There’s also a supposed ‘real-time’ plug-in out there on the forum whose name we don’t speak. I have’nt tried it, but it was supposedly developed by a Euro Avid developer. I think I have a copy at work. BTW, it was free if you registered, so no harm in distribution – it I still have it.

Some people criticize Avid’s method of switching between ‘modes’ to edit. Going from the ‘edit’ mode to the ‘trim’ mode to the audio edit mode…. it’s too much for some people.
I personally like it. Properly set up settings do wonders for your speed.

Well, you can have it quick AND cheap. Pick one.
IMO, you’ll need to get an Avid certified laptop (look here: https://www.avid.com/products/xpresspro/qualified_pc_notebooks.pdf) and XPress Pro software.
There’s many ways to do this. It’s early, the coffee hasn’t kicked in and I just came of a vacation. Forgive me if I miss something…
The media files will be compatible between your systems. To get the footage to your laptop, consolidate your project to a firewire drive. Edit like a silly monkey on your laptop. Take the laptop project (no media needed) to the workstation and redigitize the project.

No, I’d keep everything in it’s native size. If the project is 16:9, give it to them that way. Make sure they KNOW the project is 16:9, and if they need it at 4:3, they can easily reformat it.

I’d use animation – you’ll generally get the most success with it.
