I have a PC Avid Adrenaline on an HP 8000 running 2.5.2 software. I am working on a standard def documentary project and would like to be able to have another workstation on a laptop where we could pull together rough assemblies of interview bites, then transfer the timelines to the Adrenaline to do the fine cutting.

What hardware and software do I need to do this cheaply?

What are the steps I should follow to get the interview clips onto the laptop and the rough timelines back onto the Adrenaline? The material is digitized at 15:1 on the Adrenaline.

    Thanks…

[Karina Buck] “What hardware and software do I need to do this cheaply?”

Well, you can have it quick AND cheap. Pick one.

IMO, you’ll need to get an Avid certified laptop (look here: https://www.avid.com/products/xpresspro/qualified_pc_notebooks.pdf) and XPress Pro software.

There’s many ways to do this. It’s early, the coffee hasn’t kicked in and I just came of a vacation. Forgive me if I miss something…

The media files will be compatible between your systems. To get the footage to your laptop, consolidate your project to a firewire drive. Edit like a silly monkey on your laptop. Take the laptop project (no media needed) to the workstation and redigitize the project.

    Thanks Jon. Couple more questions:

My laptop meets all the Avid recommended criterion except that my Pentium M processor speed is 1.5 Ghz instead of the recommended 1.8 Ghz. Might it still work on simple timelines with 1 video and 2 audio tracks?

    Any advice on firewire drives?

I think the processor speed would be fine. It seems like a nominal difference to me.

And do you or anyone else have a favorite firewire drive to recommend? Anything I should bear in mind when buying a firewire drive?

I’ve heard Medea’ is good – also owned by Avid. Lacie is another name that pops up.
