Under ‘Deck Preferences’ in the settings tab, you’ll have to identify your camera.
According to Avid (https://www.avid.com/content/8927/SUPPORTED%20DEVICES%20FOR%20AVID%20EDITOR%20PRODUCTS.pdf), the HDR-FX1 is fully supported for capture, but digital cuts are not frame accurate.
When you digitize, select the source and you should be golden.
BTW, this all works throught a firewire cable…

I didnt’ catch you were using a Meridian. Though very stable, it was introduced in the late 90’s and firewire hadn’t grown up to become the standard I/O it is now.
You can either use one of the analog inputs, or capture via another program, and import the resulting .avi or quicktime into the avid. You won’t have reference TC for redigitizing. You could also dub your DV to a different tape format…

The last time I used this (I believe it was with XPress 5.2) I did the same – maybe it doesn’t work with MC? But, that doesn’t make too much sense – the code for the software is essentially the same, no?

What you describe as DV in out is really firewire. Are you saying your computer does not have firewire output? It’s been a while since I played with your version of Xpress, but that was the preferred method of outputting video. You may (or may not) have problems with the XL-1. Do you have any documentation that tells you how to set up your system to output? At the very least, it should be on the discs that came with your system.

The circle wipe is in the effects pallette of Avid under ‘shape wipes’. Wipes are generally considered ‘transition effects’ – that is, they are meant to lay on a cut. Try putting it on a clip (like a segment effect), and start playing with it.
Lay it over your spinning globe, and open the effect controls. Play with the edge softness, try reversing the source, etc. You won’t break the machine, and you usually learn something in the process.
After Effects is good to know – I call it PhotoShop on crack. Mattes in After Effects are a little more advanced, and take some getting used to. I highly recommend Chris and Trish Meyers book (any of them, actually) on After Effects. HIGHLY recommend them.

Think of a matte as a stencil – in the case of video, it allows you to see a layer without the background, allowing you to see whats underneath the matte. I hope that makes sense.
I’m not a big user of Avid mattes. I’m sure someone can give a better answer on them. I do know a garbage matte is used to do a rough cut around something – essentially a quick and dirty matte.
I mostly use PhotoShop and After Effects to create things with an alpha matte.
Mattes are very useful – every title you create in title tool is a matte, for example.
As far as your spinning globe, try playing with a circle wipe.

I downloaded that and it seems pretty cool. My one concern is the fact you either have to buy Quicktime Pro (it’s only $29.99) or using Quicktime alternate. I know its real QT wrapped in a different program with MPEG support, but I’d be leary about messing around with QT on a production machine. I might put it on my encoding machine….
You are correct though, its very robust and a great program for free.
